Just saying hi, and a couple quick questions

Post by Splinter »

First post :D

I drove a '91 Legacy Sedan all last summer, and this summer Ive been stuck in a 97 Mazda Protege (gutless :()

Needless to say, I fell in love with that little subby.

The time has come for me to start looking for my own car, and of course, I'd like a Sub.

I'm trying to track down a '92 Sport Sedan, havent had much luck in my city yet.

My question is, assuming decent mechanical and body, what should I expect to pay for one of these? Say, under 160,000KM (100,000 mi)

I'd prefer a manual transmission.

Also, any tips on tracking one down? So far I've checked out a couple lots, and been watching the papers.

I'm from Victoria, BC, but I'd pick one up in Vancouver if necessary (A ferry ride away)

those should be good ones to watch. there is one on autotrader in bellingham WA, and a few in portland on ebay.
good luck on the search, I'm secretly looking for a touring wagon with a bad trans but dont tell my car.

I dont mind about a scuffed up interior.

One of the first things I intend to do is re-carpet and re-upholster

I'll also be stripping out all the plastic and cleaning it and possibly painting it

it's usually not the interior that's beat. If you're looking for a SS that's manual, I think you'll probably need to be willing to travel farther(ie: I was going to drive to southern california to get a beat up touring wagon before mine popped up)

The issue for me is, how do I get there if its further away?

I doubt my parents would be willing to drive me out, I suppose I might be able to find a friend who's up for a road trip...

I'm also having a lot of trouble with there being SO MANY different places where people advertise their vehicles, and the extremely poor search functions.

Many places only let you search for certain years and up (i.e. 1992 and up, not just 1992 or 1992 and below), and turn up nothing if you're too specific, even if there is something that matches your criteria.

Sigh.

I drove 800 miles to look at a 5MT turbo sedan that I walked away from. Good luck.

I spent at least 15 hours going through craigslist, and autotrader. If you can get as far south as Bellingham, and have a good lead on a car, I'm more than willing to lend a hand and drive you farther south and take a look at the car as well for the cost of gas. I'm sure a couple of the other local guys would be interested in checking out a local turbo as well

Hey Splinter

If your not dead set on the 5-speed I've got a very nice '92 SS with the 4EAT (auto) that I'm thinking about selling. Runs and drives great, 130K miles, white exterior/grey turbo interior. I'm in eastern WA but could meet somewhere or deliver. I'm looking for $3500

Here's a pic with the rest of my turbos

Well I'm not gonna be ready to buy until the end of august/mid september, I was more trying to get a feel for prices, and an idea of where to go when the time comes.

But, if you're still interested, would you mind taking a few good quality pics of the car, including any problems (I dont expect it to be in showroom condition :P)

Also, if you've done any mods to the car, added any non-stock parts, could you tell me what they are?

VIN would be nice too

damn gary, didnt realize you had such a subaru farm. 8)
splinter, there isnt really a big main area for SS's like there is for some other cars. like old volvos is OR and WA, datsuns in socal, etc. so you might have to wait a while for one to pop up in your area as they are pretty rare cars.

It looks like it from that pic

But since I wont get a chance to take a peak before I lay down the cash, it'd be nice to see some more pics for myself.

I'm itching to just take out a loan and say yes right now, but I wanna get myself outta debt and make sure of my university situation before I get any major financial obligations

Yeah 206er, a bit of a collection forming and that pic doesn’t show the ’87 wagon (non-turbo) that my kid drives.

Laurel, thanks for the good word, since you saw it at WCSS7, I’ve repainted the scoop and rear bumper (had some chips) so its looking pretty sharp.

Splinter, I’m in the process of finshing up some details on the car, hopefully by this weekend I’ll have it all ready. I’ll take some good pics and write up a full add for the marketplace soon.

The auto to manual swap isn't THAT hard. I did it on my brother's car. Plus Legacy777 has an excelent walkthrough on how to do it. If you are stuck on a manual, don't throw out an auto too fast. The swap isn't bad. Plus, you could change the gear ratio to a 4.111 ratio and have a pretty quick little beast (quicker at least).

I'm not stuck on a manual at all, really.

When I decided I wanted one, I didnt realize it'd be so hard to find ANY 92 SS, nevermind a manual one.

I'll take what I get, and maybe looking at a manual conversion at some point in the future

another vote for the manual conversion. it wasnt hard, just time consuming, and I didnt even have to do the rear diff. the 4.111 trans is easy to find and cheap, unlike the turbo trans. I would even consider using a 4.44 trans out of a forester.
