New tires

Post by Psychoreo »

I'm getting a set of 17" 02 wrx rims and was wondering if anyone thought of running Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 at 205/45? any thoughts? Maybe BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW 2's?

These just gonna be summer tires? I had 712s, they are OK but there are much better tires out there. You auto-x or track the car?

I have these tires in 16" and they are summer only. Not bad and dirt cheap (I paid $53 or something at TireRack). Unlike some performance tires which I've found to have acceptable all season capability, these are effectively drag slicks in snow (though I do have FWD, too).

So you aren't driving on them in the winter? I'd suggest Bridgestone RE070s or Falken Azenis RT-615. I dunno what your budget is. The RE070s might rub too.

Another thing to be aware of is serious summer tires tend to be heavy. I had the previous gen Falken Azenis on my RS and it was noticably slower. They gripped like mad though so it depends on your driving needs. I loved 'em.

I'm running RE070's and I love em. They are loud as hell on concrete. Howl like a bandit when you reach the limit. And they grip like a crack whore. I'll probably try to score another set of take-offs when it comes time to replace them.

They do SLIGHTLY rub though, so I need to do more fender rollin.

Those are definitely aftermarket then. You better find out the specs on them, you will rub bad with a wide tire if the offset is too low.

ughhh...so much conflicting info. the guy i'm getting them off must be having a mental break down. He said they were 17's, they're not... they're 16's and they ARE off a 2002 wrx. sorry guys, i can only give the info i have. The offset is somewhere between 45-50 and he thinks the tire size is 205/55 but he hasn't seen them as they're in storage. so final questions.
1. What would be some good summer tires for those 16's.
2. Are 205/55's or should i use something smaller like a 205/45?
Thanks again for the info and sorry for the conflicting info.!!

To my knowledge WRX rims are 16x6.5" and +53mm offset. Which is fine of course since they are subaru rims. I don't think either of those tires come in the size you want. You should be able to scoop up some close-out RT-215s in 215/45ZR16. You have an L right? Those are the right rolling diameter and I don't think they will rub. I've never tried though maybe BAC5.2 or someone can chip in.

I have never heard of 17" usdm factory option wheels on the 2002 wrx. Perhaps dealer installed, but not factory option. Not once while I was working at Carter(the highest volume subaru dealer in the nation) did I come across a 17" wheel on a wrx(non STi) from the factory

^^^you're right, you know everything :?

he did say the guy didn't know what he was talking about, they're the stock 16" wrx wheels. People are just tryin to come up with what they could be if they were actually 17's.

hey HOMBRE. I wasn't saying that they did not exist. I was saying that I have never once seen them, nor heard of them. Doesn't mean that they don't exist(as we all should know, subaru often has random rare things available)

And I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't be such a bitch.

I dunno if they were dealer installed or not but they were certainly an option. They were even on the car they used for the commercials. I don't know when they started using the 5 spokes, but the BBS' were definitely in 2002. They are still 2002 USDM WRX wheels, maybe just not a factory option. Here's an offical Subaru photo of a car with them.

bizzare. I have never seen those before, but as I said, subaru does do things that I've never seen.

And yes Drew, I DO know everything. Absolutely positively everything. That's why I spend my time on internet forums, not to learn anything new, but to demonstrate my absolute knowledge of everything

so now that the fight is over for the rims and we've decided that they're 16's, any opinions on a good tire for summer driving?
