I have it done too. I have noticed no running benfits or problems due to removing it. But it is a bit louder and you can hear the turbo whistle is little better . Your midrange hesistation could be because of your K&N filter.

I've got it done too...no differece one way or anotehr except noise, and definately BOV and turbo whistle more pronounced now. I too am running the K&N drop in filter.
Legacy777 and I are the only ones that I know of so far to do it on a non-turbo. I personally can say it has better throttle response, it gives just enough power to make it actually feel a little faster, it loves cold weather, and it sounds good and loud! I got the kit off ImprezaRS.com and I got the Ractive cone filter.
One word of advice, though. Be sure you have every last bolt, washer or whatever necessary to put the adaptor on before you take the snorkus off!
"Der Wahnsinn ist nur eine schmale Brücke/die Ufer sind Vernunft und Trieb"
You will have to put a nut on the end of the bolt to hold the adaptor on; you don't need that with the snorkus. You might do good with rubber washers, too. I was too impatient to put it on, I had to ghetto-rig the adaptor on until I found new parts ! Aaron's ej22t, you were probably smart and took your time with it.
"Der Wahnsinn ist nur eine schmale Brücke/die Ufer sind Vernunft und Trieb"
oh, okay, i took the airbox off and replaced it with a cone filter, and you need an adaptor fot that. Actually, I haven't taken the thing out of the fender yet!
If I've been incorrectly referring to the airbox itself as the snorkus, then just be assured i know now !
"Der Wahnsinn ist nur eine schmale Brücke/die Ufer sind Vernunft und Trieb"
personally, id leave the snorkus in, but put a valve going off the airbox that could be switched on and off. Put a k&n in, and for the most part leave the valve closed, hp isnt so great around town.
Course, i marvel at the engineering accomplishment that is the '92 camry.
I built an adaptor bracket out of particle board for 2 bucks. took me 10 minutes with a jigsaw and some paint.

I've got a Custom short ram air intake on my n/a EJ22. Rather dramatic HP gain for a bolt on. Oh and the SOUND!! Combined with my Cat back exhaust(also custom) my car is soundin' sweet! I did have to get an adapter for the K&N conical filter. The intake replaced the snorkus with a nice polished aluminum tube 3" in diameter. Looks and sounds great. I would like to get some pics posted for you guys but I dont have a digital camera or a place to host pictures. Ill get to it sometime.

I got my setup off of Ebay. It came with a K&N cone filter, MAF adapter, silicone hosing, and silicone sleeves. It was a direct replacement for the snorkus and airbox. Your boxer will sound dramatically different. I needed to lean out my A/F ratio after installation to optimize HP. Top end is awesome, especially on colder days. You will lose a lil low-end but I think it is worth it. As soon as I get a hold of a digicam I will post pics of my entire ride. It may be a few weeks though.

I did it on my 92 L, non turbo.
I removed the single bolt on the inner fender well, that holds the snorkus in place. I simply pushed the snorkus tube about half an inch, back into the fender and slightly pushed it to the side. The 'spring' in the snorkus tubing held it in that position.
Sounds a bit better....
Only thing, and I'm not sure it's even connected to this, is that, about one in 5 starts of the car, results in the 'check engine' light staying on....
Check out my post in the reviews section on the snorkus. I by no means claim to be an expert in jugding power or anything, but after driving it for a bit I notice a little, very little, but a little better throttle response and I think it does better in the higher rpm's. With the snorkus removed it has a little better pull above 5000 were before you could almost feel the power drop off a bit after that, now it keeps wanting to pull. I don't think it does as much as say an msd dis-2 ignition would do but I do think it helps. I also noticed that when I was passing a truck on the freeway, and a bunch of other cars stuck behind it, I hit 100 mph quite easily. With my oversized tires that probably put me a few miles faster than that, but it wouldn't have reached it that easily before. Although, one could argue that temperature factors could also make a difference like this, right? So, who knows I guess. I think it has helped personally, but not a lot. It would take a careful eye to notice. You passengers probably won't notice.

For whomever was getting the check engine light sporadically. Did you reset the ECU after you took it out?
I noticed an improvement almost immediately. Definetely pulls harder especially at high speeds. My girlfriend also noticed when she drove it and I don't even bother telling her about stuff I do to the car. It sounds to her like, "Waa wa wa. Waa wawawa." I recommend it to people. Oh yeah, my car is a 92 NA.

Hi guys...nice forum..I have done this to my N/a 2.2 and it did make it better in the whole range..a little more responsive and more noise..combined with the exaust sounds awsome..def worth the 15 mins to remove and fit a cold air ram flow to the std airbox.

I've been getting introduced to a few new things lately, one of them being Subarus. Factory turbos and awd kick ass. Another new thing to me is this mysterious "snorkus" everyone keeps referring to. Please 'splain? Anyone have a photo/diagram to educate this poor snorkus-ignorant soul? ...because it sounds like I'd want to remove mine once I understand what it is

most of us have only removed the thing, not added any parts to it. For the minimum removal, it is only two nuts/bolts and then pull the thing out.
That doesn't include the little screws holding in your wheel well cover.

Ahh I see... kinda. The snorkus is the part of the intake ahead of the air box and filter, thats kinda in the side of the car? Hmm... anyone got a direct picture of the thing? And do I have to remove my wheel to remove the snorkus, or was that just to install the new parts if I wanted to replace it?

To remove it, you're going to have to remove the passenger side wheel and fender liner. It's really not too tough, about 45 min worth of work, depending on how dirty your fender liner is:D
