A downpipe worth considering

Post by georryan »

Hey guys, check out this site:

http://www.bpmsports.com/products/exhausts/downpipe.htm

The downpipe in this picture I believe is a 3, but as you'll notice there is a second pipe there that normally has to send it's air flow down to the one hole that you'd see in say an hks pipe. I talked to Steve Barsotti (Subaru specialist/shop owner) in California and he's using it and said that he hasn't dynoed it or anything, but from what he has tried it has worked exceptionally well. He also has put it on a few WRX buffs down there and they think it has been better than other things they've put on. He thinks that second hole is about an inch in diameter. That make the pipe similar to a 4" pipe in some ways :)

Know I don't have any dyno tests, but just wanted to make you aware of some other down pipes out there.

check this one out. www.msr-usa.com I won the whole system at a rally haven't put it on yet though.I have heard very good things about these twin dump downpipes.they look almost exactly the same, mine is a c.e.s. racing systems.what brand is that one?the wastegate DP on the c.e.s. is 1.75" though not 1".the main DP is 2.5" which quick tapers into 3" within another inch of the flange.pretty interesting design really.they also make a slow taper main DP,the DP01,which is supposed to be a little better for smaller turbos.

Edit was for the website...the page I had listed isn't available anymore

This one is BPM. A company not really seen much over here. I think they are from UK or something.

I wish I knew the true dimensions of the dowpipe I showed, I just know the estimate.

I think the Perrin design is the best so far. Notice the seperation tab that "intrudes" into the turbo

That tab is becoming more common, and on some turbos they're actually putting it on the flange. At this point it may be custom, but I've definitely heard of it.

If you read the site I list on the system I won it comes with a boost enhancement plate. It goes between the turbo and the dp and seperates the wastegate from the turbine outlet.the perrins twin dump reenters the main dump very quickly. as you'll notice on ces and bpm its much further down which is supposed to be better, less turbulence. But any seperation is better then none.

I agree that any seperation is better than none. I was very close to getting a Bell Mouth design. I realized it wouldn't be very efficient.

If you want to see a crappy aftermarket DP look at HKS! No wonder you can get them for 110 used

I forgot to tell you guys another nice thing about the ces system using the boost enhancement plate is they make different ones for different turbos for maximum performance.Like lets say you have a wrx stock td04 and then upgrade to a ihi vf22,well the wastegate seperater needs to be about 5mm longer for the vf22 IIRC.No problem just call and they send you a new bep for the vf22. :) Pretty cool setup I think.

I haven't been able to get a hold of the distributer here in the states the last couple of weeks via e-mail.Let me check with the guy in australia that makes them and I'll get back to you.Just to clerify, you're only interested in a dp right. The dp01 or dp03?I will try and see about price and if there is a better way to contact msr about them.Or if you'd like call the contact # at the web site. Its long distance though. If you can wait a couple days I'll get the info.

twin dumps are better for track and street work, as they have a better torque spread, however for max horsepower applications i.e. drags, a single dump is better.

Ok I don't know what the deal is with msr, even ces in australia is having trouble contacting them.ces say's they don't sell just the dp's,shipping is too much. They would do it only for group buys of at least 4 people and didn't give price but I think it would be around 500$ US each shipped. The whole system is around 1,500$ US shipped. If anyone is interested let me know.I'm putting mine on hopefully next week and I will let you know how it goes.

I got my c.e.s. dp03 turbo back put on today! It's incredible. The sound is amazing. I have a smoother and larger torque curve, more power, faster spool up and did I mention the sound! I highly recommend this system to everyone. The shop did a little bit of a hack job to get it in but no harder then any other wrx system. I am super stoked on this setup! I finally got in touch with msr(american distributer) and they are lowering their prices very soon. They are also looking into just selling the dp's. The prices listed are also for the top line systems. You can get a cheaper muffler, no resonator, mild steel instead of stainless, no ceramic coating on dp ect... to greatly reduce the price. If you order a custom system they may be able to make it for our cars so it will bolt right up! Just call the number on the web site or give me your e-mail and I'll have them get in touch with you. I know I'm rambling but I'm excited :D
