EGR Block off Plate

Post by bluesubaru »

My top mount IC is just touching the EGR valve. It still sits low enough but makes the IC crooked looking. I look at block off plates for the EGR since all it does is recirculat hot air back into the intake. Would making a plate to block it off and remove it be okay?

Are you using a USDM EJ22T out of a BC/BF Legacy Turbo?

If so, then you don't have an EGR valve :)

If you're using the EJ22 N/A that came in the car, then yeah you would have an EGR valve, Subaru started reusing them in 95.

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation, which does just what it sounds like: It recirculates a small amount of exhaust gases back into the intake manifold, to be reburned and thusly reduce NOx emissions levels.

No, your engine doesn't need the EGR system to run, but just removing the whole thing will give you a CEL with a myriad of codes behind it.

Me personally, I would consider going backward to OBDI by getting a BC/BF nonturbo ECU and wiring it up however it needs to be done (not sure how hard that would be), and then just rip the EGR stuff out.

And where in Tampa are you? I can't believe you have 160 posts and I've never noticed your location :?

I appreciate the reply, but my info says EJ22-T, not EJ22T. What I mean to say is that I have a N/A motor turboed. And I wrote out what a EGR is, I just wanted to save you and others who would read this some time. But I figure taking in off wouldnt be a big deal, we shall see.
In tampa I am located in hillsborough county area.

They can leak because of the high exhaust pressure behind the turbo. That leaks hot air into the intake, bad in many ways.

can I just take it off period, and what do I do about the vacuum hoses going to it or the hole in the intake manifold?
Do I just leave it or should I make a plate for it?

just pinch the nipple closed or hammer it closed. The intake manifold im running on my car has a spot for an egr and i lost the block off plate that i found on another subaru in a junkyard, so i picked up an egr and just closed anything feeding off of it.

I read this that says removing it is bad, and could lead to detonation and such.

Only want to move it or relocate it so I can get my IC to sit properly.

Any other ideas then?

If you wanna tackle the project that I suggested...

... then you will have no detonation that is directly related to the EGR stuff missing, because the BC/BF ECU will not know it was ever there.

Are you sure about that?

Why is the AVCS on the STi is so loved by lots of tuners? It acts like EGR, by having the exhaust valves SLIGHTLY open when the intake valves begin to open, exhaust gas rushes out the intake valves and then the exhaust valve shuts and the intake charge, mixed with a little bit of exhaust gas, ready to receive compression and spark. Without the exhaust mixed in, you have lots of air, lots of gas, really unstable waiting to BAM. It's pretty excited. But, if you warm the mixture up a little bit, it's slightly more prepared for the heat of the compression stroke, and you can run slightly more timing advance and slightly leaner fuel trims.

Of course, this is with AVCS, and how it acts LIKE EGR. And I might not be remembering correctly, but I DO recall the guys at TurboXS telling me that AVCS WAS good because it acted like EGR.

But I could have heard incorrectly, you never know. I should ask next time I see them.

gotcha, how about a relocate kit or somehting?

but for right now I am going to leave it, but it is in the way of my top mount, that and I want to go front mount to, alot more room in the engine bay gets opened up, not to mention colder air.
But thank you all.

If your only qualm with the system is that it makes your intercooler sit funny, then get over it.

Front mounts make you cool anyway.
