Where's the Coolant Temp Sensor ?
I just bought a legacy for $300. (so far the best running car ever).
according to Legacy777 the coolant temp sensor should solve my problem(s). When it gets hot, after about 10 mins engine sputters before and after shifting.

Its under the #3 intake maniflod with brown color.
just look deep under the runner and you will see the connector. and thats the Coolant temp. sensor. Don't forget to install with the bass washer.

Thanx for the help. I just realized that my Legacy isn't "Intercooled" (as Topic), but thanks for for reminding about the washer.

Replaced mine yesterday due to occasional hard starting in colder weather, finally got to it. Think it was a 19MM wrench, used both open and closed ends. Installed with teflon tape on threads per Haynes manual.

Just replaced my CTS. Probobly a good investment, but my "sputter" problem still existed; until I breplaced the alternator. Turns out a "spike" in the voltage reg. caused a sputter before and after shifting.

What is the symptoms of this sensor going out? I was on my way home from Spocomption when my car started cutting out I looked down and saw that the temp gauge was way above the H for hot  . Pulled over and shut her down thinking that she just over heated but to my surprise the engine was barely warm to the touch.

So I called a tow company and had them bring it to the nearest town where it now sits. When the tow guy got it to town and got it off his truck I stuck the key in to see if it would start since the gauge was back below C for cold but as soon as i put the key in it jumped back up. Sound like a coolant temp sensor to you guys :?:

Didn't get a chance to pull the codes cause the ride I was able to get needed to go and I didn't wanna stay there. Going back tomorrow to see if my dad and i can fix it Ill let you all know how it goes.

For my problem on the EJ20G, it has been, fuel cut around 5psi and you can't floor the gas or it will cut while driving, but it still drivable.
Then, I just put an exter CTS along with the wiring and put it on top of my intercooler to cool it with frash air and the problem is gone away.
You should check to see any coolant hoses are leaking or do you have enough coolant in your engine. Sinec the gauge that inside your car is just an signal beside the CTS, you will see there is a single pin wire that for the gauge and it won't affect your car.

Hope it could help.

Are you saying that this could be a fuel pump issue cause thats very possible. As for coolant leak ill know when i get there but i doubt it and there was plenty when i left it there.

Its not a fuel pump problem since my fuel pump were replaced and it runs fine when I set the coolant temp. sensor to be cold enough.

there are two sensors, one for the ECU and one for the gage on the dash

so A_Dub I'm sorry to say you had the car towed for nothing. It is probably running fine and the gage sensor failed. It is right next to the other one but has only one wire. Check to see if the wire fell off or the wire is messed up

Yea professor I did have my car towed for nothing turns out it was just a dirty ground. I've had problems with that in the past and that's the only reason I was able to figure it out the cutting out I was describing was the ground being vibrated off its lasts good bit. Have no idea why the coolant temp in the dash was reading so high but seems to be working fine now.

on the turbo cars it is on the drivers side. perilously close to the brittle coolant expansion tank.

on a N/A car it is on the passenger side below the pcv valve.
