Shift lock solenoid

Post by mctigue »

I am attempting to locate the shift lock solenoid on a 1992 Subaru Legacy L wagon. I can use the override button to get the car out of park but I would like to locate the solenoid so I can repair the problem. Does anyone know where it is located or can you point me to a manual that shows where it is located?

Thanks,

Its a black box that is located under the dash above the steering column shaft. it has one nut that holds it on.

The solenoid is there at the shifter. The control box is under the dash.

This info should help

I am now having this problem intermittently. If I repeatedly stomp on the brake pedal quickly it will finally trigger. I cant tell if the solenoid is sticking or if the switch is not working all the time. What would be more likely? I'm guessing if the switch went bad it would not be intermittent but would stop working altogether so I'm leaning towards the solenoid.

When it finally does work after pressing the brake pedal a bunch of times I do hear a clicking under the dash that sounds like a relay. so perhaps its the switch at the pedal. I hear nothing at the shifter. when its working or when its not.

Switch could be intermittent as well, but you just need to try testing one and see if you can narrow it down to one or another.

My moms 91 Legacy does the samething.

When in Park and you press the button on the shifter you can hear a relay clicking under the dash. And the only way to get it out of Park is by pushing the shift lock button down and than moving the shifter back.

It'd be nice to fix this, as its kind of annoying.

Jordan,

Do you hear a relay/click noise when you depress the brake pedal?

I would recommend pulling the trim piece around the shifter and apply 12v directly to the solenoid and see if you hear it engage and click.

If so, you know the solenoid is good, and it's probably in the brake switch.

Alright will do.

Heres what I have found out. It isnt that hard to shift out of park anymore. But...

when I depress the brake it clicks at the shifter.

when I press the button on the shifter it clicks (relay click) under the dash

I drove it today and the only probem I had was once and I had the brake down went to shift from Park into Drive and it wouldnt. Let the brake back up and pressed down and it than went into Drive.

Sounds like you may have a sticking solenoid. Try testing that solenoid and see if it works repeatedly or not.
