why?
why are my tail lights always on?
even when the headlights are off, the tail lights still are on.
even when the car is turned off, the tails are still on
nothing turns them off except for when the battery goes dead.
where should i begin looking?

Is your parking light switch on, the one on on the steering wheel column?

It's the parking light, some wierd foreign thing,on mine the hazard light switch is above the climate controls.Actually right above the heat/def and the def buttons

Some places required the ability to turn on the parking lights without the key (I'm sure it's a good reason
). Thus the button. And it never happened to me cuz I knew what the button was before hand (I think from this BBS on top of that).

My old GL-10 had that button. When I first found it I was like "Wow, what a cool 'feature.'" <said with increadable enthusiasm and intrigue> I wasn't sure why it was there, maybe for emergencies or something. Most cars you can turn on the lights without the keys, but subarus you can't because the ignition kills everything, including the auxilery engine fans, so I figured that's why it had this nifty little button.

My mother did the same thing on her GL?loyale. Took me a while to figure it out because my older GL's didn't have that feature. Headlights still don't stay on even with the switch, though, so I don't get the point. Though I hooked in my big Hella fog lights to the parking lights so that I could get some light with the switch. Comes in handy while burying bodies in the woods at night.

Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.

Not necessarily the middle of the street, but when you park on narrow unlit streets, or on sidewalks.
I don't know exactly what circumstances require you to use your parking lights (or city lights) in Europe, but there are some.
My old Germany-spec Mercedes actually let you turn the left and right parking lights on separately so you could only light up the side of the car that was in danger of being hit by traffic.
