How do you tell the difference between...?

Post by Manarius »

How do you tell the difference between the 1990 and 1991 Legacies? And how do you tell the difference between the 1992-1994 Legacies?

Aside from looking at the Vin number...

There's really not much physical differences between the 90 & 91's. I know on the 91 turbo's there is a 3/4 & 1/4 hash mark on the fuel gauge. The 90's don't have any 3/4 or 1/4 hash marks.

The 92-94's have different headlights, hood, tail lights, side markers, front bumper, different gauge/dash.

I've been trying to figure this out myself. I've found there are a few signs, but only really work if the car is stock. If you're looking from the outside of the car, 90 sedans have the badge on the rear with all the specs on one side, 91's appear to have two badges, one that says the model and trim, and the other that says abs and 4wd if applicable. I don't think turbos fall under that category, but if you see a 90-91 turbo, it's only a 91 ;). Wheels, only 90 LS's had the alloy wheels with 15 trapazodial-shaped holes. 91 LS and LSi I believe had the same wheels, which are the ones with the teardrop holes. L's and STD's had steel wheels. 90 STD had black bumpers, all the rest have body matched bumpers. LSi's had leather. LS's had velour, L's had cloth, STD's had cloth.

If you're inside the car 91's don't have a sunroof light, they don't have white dots on the vent positioners, they have bumps on the mirror switch arrows. I think that's it, plus what josh said.

92-94 are a bit trickier. If you see one without an airbag, it's a 92 for sure, if it has an airbag it can be 92-94 though. The rear turn signals on sedans are different for 92's, the housing is clear, but the bulb is amber I believe, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Also 94's only have auto down on the drivers window, all other have auto up and auto down.

91 NA's have that too. Granted my gauge doesn't work so I don't pay attention to it anyways :P

No, that's not right either. My '91 has L and AWD on the left side.

I was starring at my 93 sedan the other day when it hit me that it didn't have "legacy" badges under the rear side windows. I remembered that my 90 sedan did indeed have them. It was later explained to me that they stopped that.

Where should it say "subaru" in the rear? I just have "legacy" and the "L".

92 sedans (along with 90 91) have a chrome strip that runs around the car just under the window line including the rear window. 93-94's have the only the chrome strip that runs under the door windows not the rear or two small aft windows. Which looks way better IMHO :P

One more thing related to gauges. The 90's have a red mark on the top of the temp gauge, the 91's have the same mark, but it's not red.

So does my 91 L 4WD.

The 5-spoke 94 turbo wheels look 10 times better than the 6-spoke Outback wheels on the earlier turbos.
