Cheap exaust and a manual boost controller. Without an intercooler you ought to keep the boost around 10-11 max, probably.

If you can get a turbo back, go for that. The downpipe is pretty restrictive.

We didn't get the TT motor here in the US, so I doubt anyone can really help you out with anything specifc. Intake/Exhaust/boost controller is where you would probably want to start.

He said "faster", so if he's talking acceleration he may want to stay with the TT to avoid the lag of a larger single unit.

there is that to consider, i guess.

in that case strip the interior and put a 4.44 final drive ratio transmission and rear end in it.

You could start with a decent air filter; either a panel filter to put in your air box or a cone one which will replace the air box.

A decent exaust preferbly a straight through system, dont bin the cat on the smaller turbo,as this can cause the turbo to overspin.

for $500 some nice tires or shocks.
when you want more power ditch the TT system for a 16g setup but that is going to cost a lot more than $500 all the parts needed.
maybe for now just gut the cats out, straight pipe, MBC and FCD, turn up boost.
dont the TT's have a intercooler stock? AWIC?

For starters, join this forum:

http://www.rslibertyclub.org/forums/index

Those guys know what to do much better with your car than people around here. The other place to go is MRT's website and forum. They are in Australia and are probably one of the top 10 tuners in the world for Subarus.

Aside from that, getting a good exhaust is the first step. You can pick up close to 20hp with a good turbo back exhaust. And then get a boost controller to up your boost a little bit. But for your price range (sorry, your $$$ are worth less than ours) you cannot get a new exhaust. That's where those forums will come in really handy. For $500, you can probably pick up a good used exhaust.

And long term, if you want some serious power. The TT is known for having a power dip in the middle, and there really is no way around it. One single larger turbo like a TD05-16g or a VF-22 will be better than your stock pair. It requires changing up the manifolds and getting some real tuning. But MRT can help you there. They do everything from budget engine management to the most expensive units out there...
