4EAT Fluid Leak From Bellhousing? Help

Post by napphappy »

This is in a 92 FWD Auto Legacy.

Disclaimer: This is the first Auto Subaru I have ever worked on.

So I pull the engine to "fix" all the oil leaks. I dindnt realize you are supposed to unbolt the TC before you do this. Well I got it out without to much trouble.
Then I do all the work I needed to do on the Engine and begin to put it back in.

I get it about 1/2 in or so from the block and the trannie to touch. it didnt go any further so I turned the crank slowly until I heard a
"CLUNK" the it went the rest of the way.

Got everything put back together, it started an ran fine. And will move forward and Back. But after about a minute or so ATF starts dripping off the crossmember. :(

Did I break or damage something or is something just not seated?

This is one more reason I hate Autos.

Were you fixing engine oil leaks?

The torque converter needs to be seated properly, and it sounds like you unseated it when you yanked the engine. I know others know exactly what needs to be done, so I'll let them give you the details.

Install a new seal. You damaged the seal when you put the car bck together. You have to make sure the torque converter is all the way down before you put the engine back on. Slide the torque converter all the way down the tranny, then turn it back and forth while applying slight pressure. It'll go all the way in after a while.

Well I am somewhat of a fool,

I pulled the tranny and replaced the seal, you all know what a joy that is.

After I get it all back together, I start it up only to find the same leak

So I get a light and start looking very closely for the leak, something I should have done more thoroughly in the first place.

Turns out one of the tranny lines above the Crossmember has a small leak, causing it to drip on the crossmember and run down and appear to be dripping from the bellhousing :x

Well I learned alot
