Spring idea for my 94 SS

Post by greg donovan »

i have an idea for spring for my 94 SS.

currently it is stock springs w/AGX struts.

i want a higher spring rate but i dont want the car lower.

could i use?

2004 USDM STi.............224 fronts
and
2004 STi "Pink"..............217 rears

do these drop the car? the compendium doesnt say.
if i understand the compendium properly i would need the older tapered style upper mounts/perches in the rear but the front would be fine.

this would keep close to the 132/132 f/r ratio of the stock springs.

it also seems that i could use the
2002-2003 STi "Pink".....215/190 f/r. and all i would need to do is swap ever the springs and use the stock strut tops that i have now.

am i way off base w/these ideas?

The issue I see is that the pink springs might be shorter. I think the 224f/194r 2004 usdm sti springs work pretty well. You'll also need to find rear spring perches that work.

are you saying that the 02-03 STi pinks would lower the car?

if so that is not what i want.

is the only issue w/the 04 strut tops the fact that the hole dont line up properly?

that can be worked around im sure.

Yes, that is the only issue. You can file each of the small holes out roughly 3/8" to fit the rear 04+ strut tops.

I do believe WRX owners who swap to STi springs do get a little bit of lowering out of the deal.

There's a company in Australia called Dobinson Springs that makes stock-height heavy-duty springs for our cars. It wouldn't be the cheapest option necessarily, but it does seem to be what you want.

Look at the coil spring catalogue here:

http://www.dobinsonsprings.com/html/catalogues.htm

Whiteline sells their springs; enter the Dobinson part number into Whiteline's web store:

https://www.whiteline.com.au/store/

Or email Zach Thomas at Globale Performance Parts (A US retailer for Whiteline):

I don't really know, but I thought that pink springs lowered a car slightly.

They do. But what you need to figure out is if it lowers it to a level that is comparable to stock height or if it goes lower.

If you use GDB-C/D/E Pinks use 90-91 top mounts, if you use GDB-A/B Pinks use your stock mounts or GC/F/M, SF top mounts.

if i have to use the 90-91 top mounts in the rear do i have to slot out the holes for the mounts to fit?

i would much rather use the GC group N top mounts, especially since it appears i would have to slot out the holes.

GDB-A/B are the 02-03 MY, and GDB-C/D/E are the 04-06? i still havent totally memorized the chassis codes for the new stuff yet.

No. If you use 90-91 top mounts they will fit your strut towers already.

Basically, there are two shapes of rear spring tops:

1) Tapered. These are 90-91 Legacies and 04-05 Imprezas. You can do any of the following with these types of springs:

1a) Use 90-91 Legacy rear strut tops without modification. These tops include perches.
1b) Use 04-05 Impreza rear strut tops after you file out the holes in your strut towers. These tops include perches.

2) Non-tapered. These are 92-94 Legacies and 93-03 Imprezas. You can do any of the following:

2a) Use 92-94 Legacy or 93-01 Impreza rear strut tops without modifications. You need the spring perches from the same car.
2b) Use 02-03 Impreza rear strut tops after you file out the holes in your strut towers. These tops include perches.

didnt realize that the upper mounts on these cars (in bold) were seperate from the upper perch.

Yup; they are. I think I just posted this link in another thread too:

You can get STi strut tops for BC/F-A/B(90-91)

GDB-A/B = MY01-MY02
GDB-C/D/E = MY03-MY05

Note these are for non-US cars, since we didnt get any GDB's until revision D. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong though, but that's how I understand it.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I have just been glancing through this while at work and it looks like I am doing this only half assed. I have found a set of 05 STi springs for $50 I would like to swap in. Can this be done with stock struts? I am not to worried about ride height as long as the car remains level, I really want to avoid one end being higher than the other. These would be going into a 93 USDM Turbo SS. From what I have read and I may be way off, is these will fit with the cars current top hats? Thanks for any help guys, I have been doing a lot of searching and it looks like almost everyone swaps springs and struts at the same time. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. :-)

I believe that the will fit in the struts, but not the upper perches. So you'd need new rear tops and front perches to make it work. The other problem is that the rates are too high for a stock strut. Maybe an AGX would work.

Well I actually wont be able to afford new struts. I wanted to make sure before I threw these on with stock struts. Thanks for the good information. :-)
