Was At the Local Junk Yard...

Post by LegacyT »

Saw a total of around 20 Subaru's. Several Loyales, 2 Legacy's countless chasers (one with 823 000 km's), a nice XT turbo, XT 6, RX coupe, many GL sedans and wagons, and a Turbo wagon. I was looking for a project car and may decide on the XT turbo, since its not too rusted and is for the most part intact. unfortunelty many of the cars there are worn out and rusted to death, many have moss covering whats left of the floors an eaten out trunks. Kinda sad

Everytime I go to the junkyard here in Denver all I ever find is a few early 80s GL or DLs. I think the rest get bought, rebuilt, and taken into the mountains to be sold.

I don't think the Chaser was sold in the US.

It's an older GL/DL hatch ca. 1980 (the ugly hatch kept the older style round lights while the beautiful rest of the range got the quad rectangle headlights so it may be a little newer). I always wanted to chop the roof off one of those and weld the doors shut, cut down the windshield and make a 30+ mpg no-maintenance speedster out of it (after improving the ignition & fuel).

Looks like maybe a what a GTi is to a Gulf. A 2 door with a different image (name  ). If you dropped a EA82T in there I'm sure it would be incredibly fun to drive as a roadster. Or you could try to shoehorn a EJ22T if you thought it necessary (like a couple Brats I've heard of...)

I prefer the EA81 for it's character and gear driven cam. The two I had were indestructable and cheaper than dirt. I could change the alternator and water pump blindfolded (although that would probably add a few minutes to the 15-min job). Decent bottom end torque, although slow, but there's something to be said for almost disgusting durability. I won't bore with stories. I kind of miss having the spare tire on top of it as it was always good for a laugh with the muscle car crowd. Still, I wouldn't trade an EJ for it. I never cared for the EA82 as much as I think the two timing belts idea is a little goofy and my mother had bad experience with one...
