Cars are really getting ugly

Post by entirelyturbo »

I seriously think the Golden Age of cars has passed. I dunno what's gotten into some of these designers, but some new cars out there are really friggen ugly.

The 2006 Ford Explorer:
Image

The 2006 Honda Civic:
Image

The 2006 Impreza, of course:
Image

The Renault Megane that's been out for a few years now:
Image

I seriously think these cars look like someone took a hit before penning these things. Like they want to just try something for the hell of it, without paying attention to any rules of car design.

Thoughts? Comments?

the civic through each passing generation has been getting uglier. I saw one first hand the other day. It looks like they took the TSX and the RSX, rear ended the RSX with the TSX, smoothed out the damage, shrunk it, and called it a car. It really is horrid.

Same goes for the new Impreza. Actually, 04-05 was my favorite design. Dunno what Subaru thinks they're doing, changing one of the most successfull Subaru designs. They'd better not mess with the new Legacy, or I might decide never to buy a Subie again....

To be added to the list:
Toyota Echo
Chevy HHR
Mitsu Lancer (just doesn't flow at all)

Defintely agree, a lot of the cars have been getting uglier. My dad yearns for the days (in the 80s) when most cars looked more like the 1st gen Subarus, a little more boxy, a lot less fancy (and ugly). I tend to agree, although I've never disliked a legacy design.

I don't like the grille on the new Impreza...I do like the rest of the body though.

The only thing I don't like about the '92-'94 design is the fact that is says "Legacy" across the back instead of "Subaru" like the '90's and '91's do. Other than that, I'd take a 92-94 any day, especially a SS.

Car design has been going downhill for years, asetically that is.

Umm.... I don't mean to be sexist but is there a reason why there is now a woman behind the wheel of the Impreza ... coincidence with the new grill? I mean those dangly ear rings of hers would be ripped out during a hard launch, no?

The 4th Gen Eclipse, has got to be the ugliest car ever.

The rear end, from eye level, looks like the front end of a 3rd Gen eclipse. Just awful.

I was unaware that they still had the Element for 06.

I had thought about getting one of those. They are INCREDIBLY well thought out, when it comes to utility. I dug it. I didn't get one, because my downhill bike was about 6" to long to fit in there with the wheels on, and it was 5 bolts to remove the front wheel, and no easy way to get it to stay up.

I hate almost every vehicle in this thread. I think fewer and fewer new cars are looking good these days.

I agree with Manarius, that new Impreza grille ruins it. Other than that, the half clear tails are my only other compliant.

Yeah, the element may be kinda ugly, but unlike the rest of the cars mentioned, it is an incredible vehicle. Its design is totally not for looks, but for interior space and utility. I got in one at the showroom, and its pretty cool, all the stuff you get.

As for the rest, I gotta agree with everyone, totally terrible. Well, the impreza isn't terrible, but it could do without that grille.

I saw someone digitally design a modification on the grille where the center part is missing and it just flows, and it looked really nice. I'll see if I can dig that up.

I think Acura has been coming out with some sexy cars lately.

I personally dispise the look of all Mitsubishi's. Especially the SUVs. puke

I like the Headlight on the Scion t2b, it looks like an eye of somesort, but thats about it. The WRX would look decent without that alfa romeo thing goin on.

wiscon_mark, that's definitely doable.

The headlights and front bumper of the 06 Impreza really aren't bad. Those have grown on me.

But the thing still looks like it's ready to give a blowjob

Let's not forget the 05 Jetta:

Or the 06 Passat:

Seriously, are they TRYING to make the lines contradict each other?

What do you guys think about the Mazda 3 and 6, new MX-5 and RX-8? I've been a fan of Mazda styling for a long time, but they keep getting better. The DC guys seem to be succeeding in the "bold" look, at least to me. The 300, while a car i would not buy, sure does look good. The Magnum and Charger also fit that look.

I'm not sure about the BMW 3 and 5 series. I used to be able to tell the difference between them at a distance, but i'm having a hard time again.

I'll disagree on cars like the Scion models, however, because they look VERY different from what you're used to seeing on the street. The same applies for many of the wacky european models I've seen on shows like Top Gear. That Renault looks ugly to many people simply because we have such incredibly bland cars here. I like the fact that Toyota brought over JDM models, very similar to what exists in Japan, even though they're very different from anything we currently have.

I like the new Mazda 3, 6, and RX-8. Haven't seen the MX-5 in real life yet, I think it could go either way.
3 series looks better than the 5s. The only new 5 that looks good to me is the M5.

I love the Mazdas...if I could afford a new small car it would be between a 3 or an impreza :)

I like the new MX-5, and the new Mazda 5 looks bad-ass; I think it looks like a newer Renault Espace. But the 3 I don't like, the 6 is ehh, and the RX-8 is downright ugly. Somewhere online, there is a pic of an RX-8 with a white license plate on the front with a thick black line in the center. The result: It looks like a hamster with two big front teeth!

Although I'm no Chrysler fan, I do have to say that I wouldn't mess with a Chrysler 300 SRT-8. That thing looks friggen mean, and it has the 6.1L Hemi with 425hp, so I'm sure it backs up its looks.

...too bad the 300 doesn't come with a manual. Or did they change that? Because there's nothing like controlling 425HP with your right hand :)
