I hate safety lectures, but i also think parents should only buy big slow cars for their kids, SUVs even. The extra they spend in gas, they will save down the road in insurance . Even n/a legacies are too zippy. Nothing gave me more respect for driving slow then driving an F250 every day. People zipping around changing lanes every 10 seconds in little sports cars look pretty silly from way up there. and they rarely get there any faster.

You're an idiot if you think an SUV or an F250 is a "big slow car"

No.

They are only as slow as long as you're light on the throttle. The power to weight ratio is a bit lower than normal vehicles, but that's for towing capacity, in both cases.
Also, your "big slow cars" are still dangerous --even at slow speeds of 25mph. SUVs and Super Duty trucks are only security blankets for the people who drive them. They are not safe for anyone outside the vehicle.

But I do understand what you're getting at. I tend to drive bigger vehicles slower, as I have more respect for their size and inherent lack of agility. However, familiarity always breeds contempt.

can't argue with you there.

i dont mean any suv, i mean under powered ones. I guess big isn't that essential, but i think a high stance improves visibility and decreases confidence in high speed cornering. If i were buying a car for my child, I would be more concerned about their safety, not others

hmm, let me try and list some candidates.

volkswagon vanagon - high center of gravity, 90hp

plymouth reliant - this was my first car, what a peice of crap, I certainly didn't find myself getting to out of control driving that

Older land cruiser, slow, safe

And your absolutly right, my F250 is not slow

Oh, and if your truely a ricer, then your an idiot. give me all that money your wasting putting stupid shit on your car and i'll go out and buy something that will make me money.

When you're placing a new driver out on the road, one who still lives under YOUR roof, and is driving YOUR vehicle, under YOUR insurance coverage, who would you rather protect? YOU, or the kid? Obviously, this is a one-sided decision, but what are the chances they'll hit someone elses' property or car, vs them losing control and hitting a tree in the middle of nowhere? In this world of litigious bullshit, (no offense, ACP.) you gotta do what you need to do to protect you and your assets, and all those who you allow to act upon those. My vote is with the geo metro. Saves gas AND insurance. And the days it doesn't run, well. . . Your child AND assets are safe that day, aren't they? It's all in how you look at it.

volkswagon vanagon - high center of gravity, 90hp
All my friends that drove these still continued to smoke a bowl, a cigarette, talk on the phone, and manage to shift into 4th at 70mph.
plymouth reliant - this was my first car, what a peice of crap, I certainly didn't find myself getting too out of control driving that.
I agree here. The K car, or as it was known in my family, The Sports Car, holds some of my first car-based memories. Hehe, tissue boxes in the back window, vinyl leather seats, and my grandmother humming, instead of listening to the radio. What she was humming, I'll never be sure. :tear:
Older land cruiser, slow, safe
Big 4wd jeep-lookin' deal, right? Short wheelbase rides are fun, but, like the high-centred VW bus', I would wager they could tip over in a joyride, or in slippery conditions. You never know what kids'll do.
And you're absolutly right, my F250 is not slow
I've driven a few. :D I wouldn't mind owning one, in fact. I do like 'em.

I think what it boils down to is teaching your children self-discipline. While this lecture is coming from a guy who has absolutely NO self-discipline whatsoever, I recognize it as the solution to many decisions made day-to-day in any situation. But when you've got an immature kid (We all are at 16, don't front) and freshly out the DMV, self-control of any kind goes down the drain as the excitement level and realization of a new kind of freedom takes effect.

Anybody want to see the rubber I can lay down in my "big and slow" ford explorer with a 4 litre V6?

Just wait till I put the 302 in it with the custom intake and a locker in the rear...

I'm going to get a sticker that says, "big 'N' slow"

Thanks sillyp. If you are ever in FL and need your "small and fast" pushed, pulled or dragged....call me.

My first car was a 91 crx Si. That car was WAY too much(all 108 hp of it) for a 16 year old girl. I understeered into a curb, and my mom sold the car. I inherited my dad's old 91 Legacy L wagon with a (dundundun!!!)AUTOMATIC. I was disgusted. But after realizing the beauty of being able to have more than 1 passenger, I also began to get used to the L wagon. I think once you get over the initial lackage of sportiness in whatever car you drive, you tend to drive it harder. I know that I could awdrift around many corners in my neighborhood(read: big empty valley in a watershed), and I drove that car like a maniac. After "upgrading" to the 92 turbo, I believe that my driving style has calmed down noticably, as I don't have to push the turbo nearly as hard to achieve the "same" results as I had to push the 91.

Ya, I had a '91 Eddie Bauer Explorer for years (was nice for awhile and then just fell apart) and it was damn quick when you punched it. That 4.0 V6 has some power.
