Question about ignition coils

Post by jvgoff »

Hi All,

Is there a significant difference between the 22433AA360 coil pack and the AA230 ? I have the AA230 with a hairline crack in the enamel, and many websites i search show the 360 when i fill in the correct year/model etc. so just wondering if they can be interchanged

car is actually a 94 impreza 1.8 2wd (found this forum via google, with a similar thread but not quite the same - hope you guys can help!)

thanks

Don't know this this will help but.....

I recently cooked one of my EJ20T JDM Legacy coil packs. The four ignitor coil over plug style. I dunno what happened but it just let all the smoke out. I measured the primary resistance should be about 1 ohm - so 144W is the coil is stuck on by the ignitor. yikes! Anyway, maybe it got hot and cracked or something. I just don't know what the casue was.

So, I justed used my 1.8L dual ignitor coil pack as a temporary replacement. The coil characteristics are more or less the same and it works well. But you do have to connect an additional spark plug to prevent the second terminal from sparking all ofver its self.

So now I have three coil over plug, one plug on cylinder 4 with a spark plug cable and one more dummy sparkplug on the strut!! I also have an extra coil for future emergencies :)

So, I think any coil designed to run with a subie ignitor will work. Just an educated guess tho....

PS Does anyone have a coil over plug coil that I can buy??????

They should interchange just fine, Jeff. There are also a few other options: any coil pack from a first-generation Legacy, for example.

Doesn't the WRX have coil-on-plug, andys2? Maybe you could one one of those if that is the case.

problem solved

Looks like I left the coil on!

Apparently the coil is grounded [switched on] (current ramps up in the primary inductor) for a few milliseconds before it's ungrounded (inductor core energy dissipates across the spark gap via secondary coil) THEN there is the dwell time where the is no current throught the coil (not grounded). I guess I had mine grounded the whole time somehow. IF you leave them on the inductor saturates and you have about 144W dissipated in the coil. Smoke show.

dwell, charge, spark, dwell........
