here are the latest pics of the new improved blue subie mug intake. i have had it on the car almost two weeks and it really seems to work better than the first one i made. i have had a check engine light come on but i goofed the other day when i was cleaning off the back netherregions of the motor and must have gotten an electrical connection or relay wet.[boostjunkie did u track down your motors wet relay yet?] once it stops raining here i will be able to remove the intake assembly and check everything out, then i will take pics of the blue intake standing on the bench so everyone can get a good lookie.
I was a a subaru meet sponsored by exeter subaru in New Hampshire the other day, they rented a drag strip for the day...it was great. But they had brushed aluminium or polished stainless steel STI mugs...they looked great, I almost bought one...but was a little strapped. I bet they'd work great for it...
Micum
but the blue looks really great and matches my silicon...
hi all, just got back from a long weekend down to boston and then up to portsmouth.....without kids stopped in at exeter subaru said hi to the guys there and had them bring out one of the sti-mugs. its just like the one my son got in his us open participants backpack 'cept his had jeep on it. yes they are nice mugs stainless in and out with a nice knife edge opening, but they are just too big.if i could find a silicone sleeve that was large enuff to coax over the opening i could make it work....that said does anyone know what happened to baker precision? i cannot find an old packing slip with a phone # and their website is no longer. they have a great selection of silicone inlets ,ells, and such. i will be removing the intake part from the car this week to inspect it and take pics. i need to find another place to host the pics cuz i hate that cardomain logo on the pics i posted at the beginning of the thread. and i have traced down the company that supplies subaru with the blue and gold logo mugs so now i need to contact a sales rep there. soooooon hopefully
i will post more pics of the inside of the intake asap.... i have been working on other subie related items and have hit "trying to source component" wall once those are done then i will try to put together a package deely for fellow turbo legacy owners
Im always a fan of self fabrication but... im really at a loss for words here... why the mug anyway? Why not a 2.5ID piece of pipe or something? Im not flamming this one im just amazed the lengths some people will go to to find a whole horsepower.... but if next week you make a flywheel out of a dinner plate and a spatula, ill hurt you
I think the convenient thing about the mug is that the outer diameter is different at each end, and is appropriate to mate with the relevant tubing on the car.

i guess it is rather convienent... But if it was me i would have scraped the whole factory intake and made it all from 2.5 or 3in ID pipe. My GrandPa always told me to never do anything half ass. In success and in failure, go big, or go home
Making a brand new intake from scratch isn't something accessible to everybody. Replacing just one part of the intake that's particularly restrictive is a great alternative, especially if it can be done cheaply.
This reminds me of part of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance... I'll dig up the passage at some point.

i wasnt refering to the construction half ass... its rather creative actuly. What i meant was that if it were me, i would have done the whole intake and not just one piece of it. In my grandpa's eyes, doing only part of the job is halfass but he was a stubborn bastard so ya know But i think what he did was great.
i hear what ur saying redline...this is just one part in the reworking of the intake path. i am currently working on what goes on either side of the "mug" part to straighten the path to the turbo. this was not done for as u say "for a whole horsepower" and if u thought about it for more than 2 seconds you might realize a pipe is a pipe is apipe, except when it is insulated and already has the reduction from the maf housing size down to the turbo inlet side. i had looked at many possibilities before stumbling on the coffee mugs and found that many of those didnt stack up...and there is a great deal of variation in the different ways the mugs are manufactured. but in the end stainless steel is stainless steel and smooth plastic flows well. hp gains?...that would be up to the dyno but i do know i had to turn the mbc down all the way to the lowest setting after installing this part, and it will stay there till the ic goes in and the turbo back goes on.
Legazee that's pretty darned creative. It was only a few days ago I wondered about eliminating that air box but saw that a straight pipe ain't gonna cut it. I guess I'll be out sourcing something similiar. Right now all I've been using is alot of ABS plumbing to and from the IC and although it works it sure is ugly. Good work!
thanks gordo, i need to get in touch with richard bruckner[i think at maestro subaru?]not sure if i have the name right but jason grahn told me he would be better than subaruparts.comwho never return emails ,calls ,carrier pigeon, or any other form of communication about gettng a small qty of the mugs at a discount, that way i could keep the cost down to make them for board members. once i can get set up, its just as easy to do 10 as it is one, well at least if there is beer and coffee involved. so if u want one of these i would put u on the list, the deal is 40bucks and buyer pays the shipping. i would like to make several of them and take them to the eastcoast shootout in pa. nextmonth but my legt is in pcs. right now blasted wiring and once i started u know how that goes...well i should go ahead and move the battery then the easher bottle then the header tank then the ingiter and oh yes timing belt and seals, rebuild ps pump...yaddahh yaddahh yaddahh
legazee it would sure be nice if you could make the shootout! I will definitely be there and it would be really cool to meet a fellow bbs'er. It's going to be a blast! If you can't make it with your Legacy maybe I could take you on a run or two or something. Let me know if you're going and maybe we can hook up.

after suffering thru the rigors of a broke hard drive and crappedout compaq....finallly back in the wired world .....just wish i could say the same for the leg-turbo.ya know how one thing leads to another?, well i pretty much dismantled the moter just shy of pulling it[that will have to wait for the lightweight flywheely and a few titanium internals and such to be bolted in....after the garage is done] i have however been working on the whole intake stream and other components that i will be trying to post over the winter. i am a little closer to posting a sign up notice for interest in the resonator replacement intake.....and a couple of other items for our legacyturbos. stay tuned
