Modified EJ22t swap into a 93 LS. Possible?

Post by YarPirate »

Hey, I'm new here, and I'm really sorry if this has been answered already. I checked the first page and didn't see anything like it, but if there is another thread or site that explains this in detail, please link me to it and I will close/delete this thread.

I recently purchased a 93 Legacy sedan (N/A, AWD, AT) and I am very satisfied with it so far, but I would like to make it more powerful in the future.

I would like to install a turbo into a built-up EJ22t engine with 2.5 head and 5MT. Do any of you know approximately how much this will run me for expenses, and exactly how much work would be required to put the completed engine/transmission in?

I'd like to buy the swap stuff part by part, slowly putting it together and making it fit. A semi-complete EJ22t engine would be nice for a start, then go from there. Would a 2.5 head fit on? I heard many stories about subarus being very interchangable in terms of parts, but I have not heard of the 2.5 head on a 2.2 specifically.

No, I'm not saying "I'm going to go do this! Watch me, I'm awesome!", I'm merely asking if this is a stupid idea, and whether or not I should just do something easier. I'd like to hit around 250 horsepower after it's all done... that would be plenty for me.

Again, don't take this the wrong way, if it's a stupid idea just tell me... point me in another direction. Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the BBS Eric. The conversion is possible but to try and you wouldn't be the first. If you do some searching with the search button you'll find a lot of info, in particular look for projects Matt Monson has done.

yea ive done an ej22t swap into an N/A. it wasnt too bad to say the least. its just the parts that you need will be kinda scarce... such as the turbo specific wiring (wastegate solenoid, map sensor, etc..) and dont forget the turbo crossmember. even if you do find one they will be sort of expensive. around $150 ive seen on here and i think that was without shipping costs... theres a bunch of other things as well. just do a search... should be able to find what you are looking for.

The first question I have for you is, how much are you looking to spend? If all you really want is 250chp, there are far more cost effective ways to hit 250hp. I am assuming you mean 250 crank HP. 250 at the wheels is a completely different financial ballgame.

But to do what you are suggesting, properly, I would expect to spend in the neighborhood of $2000-4000. The range really depends on if you use things like factory exhaust plumbing( like $75 for a downpipe) versus aftermarket (like $400 for the downpipe). So, tell me your budget and I will give you some very specific ideas to play with.

Lastly, while you can collect the parts piecemeal, you can't install them that way. This will be an all at once sort of project if you want it to run properly and be reliable. For example, you can't just change your crossmember one weekend, and go back to driving your car. Once you have a turbo crossmember, you can't use anything but turbo exhaust components...

I can spend upwards of 6,000 USD on this project when I plan on starting it (after winter break), and tons of time on it during spring break.

Yes, I was talking 250 crank hp... and if there's an easier way to get it, that's great... tell me all about it!

I'm not sure if I understand... I was talking about getting an incomplete engine, making it complete on the bench, getting all of the components together, and then starting the swap. I didn't mean "today I'll add the intercooler piping! Tomorrow I'll add the intercooler!" stuff. I know that never really works. Is it a bad idea to build the engine up on the bench before installing it?

I'm MAINLY wondering about how a 2.5 head would fit on the EJ22t block. I know the EJ22t turbo swap has been done, but has anyone transplanted the 2.5 heads onto the 2.2 block? Sorry if this is a really dumb question, but it was a brain fart I had one day.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice, guys.

OK,
The money is out of the way. That's the big hurdle. And I just misunderstood your approach, but what you have clarified is a sound approach. There is a sticky in this forum telling about Xephyr's old set up. That's a good place to start your reading. He used to run and EJ22T with DOHC Ej25 heads.

The key to this swap is engine management. There are a couple of options in that respect. There is the good old Link, but it is kind of outdated. The two more modern ones you should look at are the E-manage and the Perfect Power ECU. Either one will run you in the neighborhood of $500

There is no need to get anywhere near a complete EJ22T. All you really need is the bottom end. They can be found in our classifieds, or on E-bay. Currently Snowjob is selling one and there are a couple of more listing in the FS section. Price range is huge on these, but I would budget $300-700. Try to find one in good working order. There is no reason to spend big money on forged pistons or change anything on the shortblock at all. If you have some burning desire to run forged pistons, Crawford Performance can supply you with them.

On the heads, again, there is nothing wrong with stock. You will find some information about coolant passage issues with SOHC Ej25 heads, but it is mis-information. I know a number of guys running SOHC heads with no problems. Expect to pay $400-600 for a good set of heads with the intake manifold (which you will need because the bolt pattern is different)

Either way you go, SOHC or DOHC heads, the biggest issue to overcome is getting coolant and/or oil to the turbo. On a factory turbo head, there are returns . The NA heads don't have this. Check out Unique Motorsports for some ideas on solving this. Or, you can just pay Chad to provide you with the parts to do this. He can also take care of headers, up-pipe and downpipe for you if you don't want to go to the trouble of swapping to a turbo crossmember. I don't know what he's charging these days for a complete "kit"

If you go the factory route, you will save a little bit of money, but need to change to a turbo crossmember. Expect to pay $150-200 for one of those. The rest of the stuff (headers, up-pipe and downpipe) is pretty easy to come by. Probably around $250 for everything.

The last few things to address are the turbo and the injectors. With DOHC Ej25 heads, WRX and STi injectors are straight drop ins to the fuel rails. On turbos, your choices are limitless. A td04 takeoff from a WRX can be found for $100 or less, but will be at it's limit with 2.2l of displacement and high flowing heads. Get something stronger like a Td05-16 or Vf-8. You can find them new from Deadbolt Enterprises for like $800 or used here or on NASIOC for like $400-500.

Oh, and for an interooler and BOV, you can use a WRX unit. It will bolt right up to the DOHC intake manifold. Get it complete with BOV and all the related plumbing for the BOV and the Y-pipe for the cooler. You will need some custom plumbng from your MAF to the turbo, but the rest can be done with stock components. Expect to spend $250-400 for this stuff.

Lastly,
Out of this list of stuff, what follows are things I can provide:

Ej20G closed deck block. It is a 2.0l instead of 2.2l, but just as strong.
Ej25 DOHC heads with manifold and fuel rails. They need a rebuild, but that lets you get a valve job and clean then up a bit for even more flow
All of the factory exhaust plumbing from headers to up-pipe to downpipe.
If you are interested, PM me and I'll put together some sort of package deal, and make sure you get some of the key items like oil pump, water pump, and tensioner pullies, that are often left off of a shortblock...
