400 WHP Impreza EJ20??

Post by Mr.Pessimist »

So I'm talking to a guy at work today and he owns a WRX and a 2005 Leg GT. He says that when he was with the WRX guys they were claiming 400 WHP out of there EJ20 engines.

I sit and wonder then why some of you guys were saying that the max I'd be able to squeeze out of my EJ22 would be 400. Not only does the first gen 22 have higher displacement but its a closed-deck too.

Please explain...

EJ20's have higher flowing valves or something...they get more HP even though they have less displacement.

I dont see any reason why a built EJ22T shouldnt be able to make more than 400hp. But I mean BUILT like heads, pistons, rods, etc.. big turbo, IC, proper engine management and tune. You can see how that starts to add up, and you havent even touched the driveline.

a stock EJ22T block with upgraded supporting components (talking stock block) and proper aftermarket engine management (standalone ECU) should be able to do 400hp easy.

ej22t with heads could do 400hp. ej20 what though. 400hp on pump is a little far fetched on a 205. but a 207 on the otherhand isnt so far fetched. i doubt the 205's ability to even hold that power.

Yes, its possable, on both motors, and reliably.
Remember, the EJ20 is actually the race motor.
People always argue the whole closed deck vs/ open deck debate, but its pretty far down the list on things to go wrong in a high HP Soobie motor. Pistons and rods will go bad first.

Without getting into the block discussion at all, it is ultimately about the heads. Ej207 (STi heads) flow in excess of 300cfms. Ej22T heads flow around 190cfm. Even ported to the max, the Ej22T heads won't flow more than 240cfm or so.

Hitting 400chp from an Ej22T has been done on stock heads. You just need a big enough turbo, injectors, intercooler and proper engine management. But that is still like a $3000-5000 investment. 400whp is a totally different realm. That's 600+chp territory...
