suspension upgrade

Post by georryan »

Sweet, Thawa and I put in a new suspension in my car today. I ended up throwing in AGX struts and the Prodrive P1 springs for an RS. The spring rate can be found in the compendium uptop, but its pretty close to be even (215/195 I believe). I also put in sti top hats all around.

The car sits 1 inch lower and looks real good. I'll get some pictures up tomarrow and put up a review on it once I've let the springs settle in.

The perches in the front needed to be changed as well as the rears. The top hats in the rear bolted right up. This has been discussed before, but I figured I'd just say so in my post as well.

I've ridden in an impreza with spt springs which are pretty close in spring rate, and it was a bit rough. In my car, it rides quite nice. I'm guessing the extra weight helps out.

Sweet! I can't wait to see pics. :)

I really need to get my GR2's in. My suspension is tired.

Pictures can be found here.

The pictures could have been better, the sun was pretty harsh at the time, so when I can get some better angles and shots with less shadows on the wheels and all that, I'll put them up.

Also, there is a shot in there of my steering wheel I've had on for a while. I figured a black interior needed a black steering wheel.

Just got the car aligned today and I'm sitting at:

Camber -0.7 , -0.7
Castor 3.5 , 3.6
Toe 0.00, 0.02

So that's pretty good. I want to get the camber to -1 to -1.5 as whiteline suggests, but I'll need camber bolts for that.[/url]

Oh, I'm also running 205/50/16 for tires. I think a 205/55/16 would fill up the wheel well a little more, but I like it as it is right now.

Looks good! I mean, except for it being a '91 you couldn't ask for much more, except for it to be a '92 of course. :P

What seats are you running? Those look more like the 93-94 seats. Steering wheel looks good too. :)

Yep, those are 93 seats actually. A mechanic/friend over here got a wrecked 93 sedan and he decided to use it for parts. He told me to come pull out the interior and he'd give it to me for a good price. So, I pulled the entirle interior out. (Dash, panels, seats, belts, etc.).

The only thing I dispise about the 91 is the lighting. The rear end leaves a little to be desired, but other than that, I like the front end better than the 92's. That's just me, though.

I should have gotten a better angle on the shot, but in the corner of this picture you can see my brother's 92 in the background, part of it at least. Its the same as Vikash's car, except a year older. (and running 4.111 gears).

AGX into 91SS

Post by kleinkid »

I have done the searches, read the many different posts, ordered parts or have them in hand and believe I will be ready to install the KYB AGX struts into my 91 Sports Sedan. I would like you to review this list and tell me if it looks OK for fitment. Struts--AGX 734006, 734007,733010, and 733011. Top strut mounts--STi group N, front ST2031055000, and the rear(not in hand yet so don't have the part number). Rear spring seat(perch) '93-01(?) Imprezza 20373AA200, fronts on order. Whiteline "Control" springs--front 70198, and rear 70369. Currently on 15' wheel, 195/60 tires. I will be taking before and after height measurements, and will post those along with parts cost and source after the installation is complete. I will also be taking, before, in process, and after installation pictures for my own records and could share those if anyone is interested. Thanks, John.

Those struts are correct, as is the top hats (all subaru top hats are the same for the front from 91-01 or something like that). The rear top hats are ST2032044140.

Edit: the rear top hat number I mentioned is for the impreza. I don't know if it is the same if you are going for post face lift legacy top hats. It sounds like you are going with the impreza suspension so I didn't think to make that mention earlier.

The struts are the same for the impreza and 92-94 legacy (if you are getting the agxs). If you are getting Imprezza/2.5RS springs, then you will need the rear spring perches (of which I didn't get new, so don't have a part number) and the top spring perches ( I also got from a junkyard and don't have a part number).

Other things to consider would be your bump stops and the dustgard thing that goes over the strut and bumpstop. My rear bump stops were bad, but I left them in. The fronts were fine. The front dust cover thing was fine, but the rear dust cover thing is hooked into the upper spring perch on the 91. It can sit on the bump stop if it is in good shape. If it is not, you can just zip tie it to the upper spring perch.

Good luck.

I bought the springs from www.pdm-racing.com. On their homepage, click on subaru corner at the upper left, and then scroll down to the chart for springs. I bought the Legacy Sedan RS Turbo for 92-94's, #'s 70198 and 70369. The 70369 has less of a taper to them than stock struts that are in 91's, I assume. I feel pretty good that the STi top mounts will be fine. I am trying to make sure I have the right parts before I get my car up on the jack stands, take everything apart and then find out that something is missing and now my garage space is clogged up and have to leave it there until the right stuff is obtained.

I'm not sure if they top hats for the impreza and the 92-94 legacy are the same in the rear. If they are, then the number I gave you is the correct one. I think both will work cause they are only a few mm off or something like that. You will need upper Spring perches for a 92-94 legacy.

You're current front upper spring perches should work fine, but since you're getting new ones, make sure they are legacy ones. Other than that, it sounds like you are doing fine. Jus know what you want to do about your bump stops and dust gaurds if yours are bad.

I may have goofed up. I have 93-01 Imprezza spring seats(perch) front and rear, but am checking to see if part numbers are the same as for 92-94 legacy.

Found out from a dealer that the rear spring seats(perch) for the 92-94(?) legacy and the 93-01(?) Imprezza are the same. Number 20373AA200. The fronts have a different part number. Legacy 20323AA100, Imprezza 20223FA000.

Front AGX's installed on my 91 today.

Post by kleinkid »

I installed the front AGX struts, and Whiteline "Control" springs in my 91 SS this weekend. I used new STi group N top mounts, and was able to reuse the rubber helpers and the rubber seats(upper). The top of the damper rod sticks up higher than the stock damper rod and the dust seal is not able to plug back in. Is this right? This really needs to be sealed to keep dirt and water out. For the rears I discovered that one rubber helper was in pieces and the other one was missing, and the lower rubber seats are damaged, so am ordering new. Follow up-- If you look at the parts graphic for '91 front strut, the dust seal is pc. # 17. I used a 3/8" gasket hole punch and punched a hole in the center and the dust seal now fits nicely around the top of the damper rod and plugs into the STi top mount. This will keep dirt and water out of the top mount bearing area pretty well, and leaves the top exposed to change settings on the strut without having to remove the dust seal.

my mechanic told me that the front agx for 93-01 impreza and whiteline springs fit well along with the group n top hats for 93-01 impreza.

the rear top hat for the 93-01 impreza did not fit with the whiteline springs for 91 legacy. he mentioned to me that the top hats are quite small. anyone else has that problem?
