you can get an NA tranny from a 90-97? i think car as long as its not a 1.8 impreza (they have smaller transmissions/rear diffs) and just pull the transmission apart and run the NA gearset in your transmission. i'm running a gearset out of a 97 impreza 2.2 wagon, and it works great... it only cost $50 for the whole transmission (the center diff casing was broken) as long as its from an old style transmission (90-97) the gearset will fit perfectly.

if you broke 2nd gear, you will have to replace the input shaft like phil said. you can buy the gear and the input shaft seperately but you need a press to change them. i would not suggest just running it with the broken second gear at all.... those little teeth get stuck in the shift rails and make it so you cant move your car out of gear, and sometime they get sucked up into the other gears and cause even more problems. i would park it until you fix it. i can provide you with some pictures of a broken 2nd gear and what you have to replace if you want (my brother broke 2nd gear on his car a month or so ago) sorry!!!!

The 1st and 2nd gears on the output shaft are not one peice. The 1-2 shift fork resides between 1st and 2nd gear on the output shaft.

If 1st and 2nd on the output were one peice, then the transmission would ALWAYS be in 1st AND 2nd gear... and it wouldn't like that.

This is probably what your 2nd gear looks like...

Scott- Is the place in Montoursville you're talking about Carusso's? He's the one that fixed the Tahoe and yes, he's pretty reasonable.

No, I don't really have any way around now. Jen and I are going to have to start sharing the Tahoe again I guess.

Hardy- Yeah, I'm not real keen on the whole switch to a cable setup either. I'm not real keen on a NA tranny at all though either, even if it's hydro.

Doug- You have to order them from the land of the rising sun huh? That sucks. :(

Phil- My reverse seemed to work or at least I did use it to turn around and it seemed ok. 1st works but it is really hard to get in gear and feels a little crunchy.

I don't know if I'd even feel comfortable using your tranny even if it was an option. I really appreciate the offer or whatever but the way my luck is going, I'd probably break it. It means a lot that you'd ven consider it though. =)

The whole NA tranny thing might not be an option for me either. I'm really sick of jerry rigging stuff on my car to get it running. I'm truely leaning towards a part out and just giving up on my dream of having a badass BC turbo. I'll go get a truck or something and wake up and realize that I'm 30 with children and poor. Not the best situation for building fast cars. Maybe I should just sell every Subaru related item I own and start over. Maybe then my luck would change or I could finally get a break in life. I'm tired and all this crap is starting to hurt my soul.

90-97 huh? Hmm, that could maybe be a solution. I don't know though, I'd still have to pay someone else to fix it.

Don't give up brotha! You cant!

I can't let one of my modding mentors go down like this. We lost Jason, we ain't losin you!

I'll sell you my transmission cheap cheap if it means you won't give up on Subarina. You've been through to much with her to give up like this. You went through a motor and now a tranny. Your rebuilding the motor, and that'll be sweet.

Besides, if you aren't there for the F&S and the Shootout, it'll be boring with me winning all the Legacy events ;)

Ah brother, it ain't like that. Just seems it when you let your scope get too small.

And yeah man, don't part it. You have gone through too much and gotten too close to being done. I mean seriously, what else, major, can go wrong? You're rebuilding the engine, a new tranny, that only really leaves brakes and suspension as the systems that could go wrong. Aside from that it's a misc. CV joint/sensor here or there.

Isn't everything press-fit on the input and driven shafts? Three years ago it cost me $1200 to get my NA tranny rebuilt and that was just putting in new syncros. They left the bearings in there.

I'm curious about the cable to hydro clutch thing since the only clutches capable of handling the motor I'm building are pull-type. I do like the cable clutch due to simplicity and the hill-holder. I'm also looking at the STi-RA gearset. Since I'm not into drag racing, I don't feel the need for a dogbox.

NOOOOO, you can't give up Matt! Never! I refuse to hear your negative words!

I'm glad the community feel here is just as nice as SLi is, even with a bigger member base. :)

Douglas- Is that all for power handling? one of the guys on SLi has a 2.0 WRX swap and is putting out about 300whp and is okay with his 98 GT Tranny, although i doubt he beats on it hard...

I dont know about changing a cable tranny to hydraulic, but I think it would be very easy to convert a hydraulic to cable. I was checking out a wrx tranny the other day and the only thing that seemed to prevent it was just a bracket to hold everything in the correct position.

Thanks for the encouraging words guys. We'll see, this may seriously be the straw that breaks the camels back though. I have other unresolved issues too. I'm running on retarded timing all the time because my ECU doesn't see my VSS signal for some reason, so I need a new ECU (hopefully that will fix it, it may not). I have fuel cut issues that baffle everyone, and my motor is weak to boot.

I've invested a tremendous amount of time and money on this car and it consistantly dissapoints me. I know that if I rebuild my other engine, get injectors and EM, that I could be damn close to where I want to be in the motor department though too. It's just very frustrating and I don't have the time or money to do things the way I really want and need to.

Matt,

You can use a cable clutch transmission and convert it to hydraulic pretty easily. The two bosses that are in the picture that vikash posted. For the hydraulic pivot arm, you use the other boss. So you'd have to tap the other boss (I don't think it's drilled), then move the pivot arm, and use a clutch mc & slave cylinder from an RS or similar. Yes you would need a n/a style clutch & pp, not to mention swap diff.....but I guess all that depends on where you can get a cheap tranny....

I think he could get away with using the stock Legacy Turbo master cylinder with an RS slave cylinder.
