Install rear lsd while I'm at it?

Post by legacy92ej22t »

I was thinking that maybe I should install my rear LSD that I've had laying around for over a year and half. Since I'm doing a tranny swap and have to remove the drive shaft and stuff and the car will be out of commission for a while anyways.

Is there anything else I should replace while I'm at it? I've never done it before. Any special advice or things I should know going into it?

You'll need to drop the axle back, but I'd assume you'll have that stuff out anyway.

Only hiccup is getting the rear diff out and back in again. If the studs come out of the diff, it's easier. However if they don't it can be a little more of a pain in the butt. I think I needed some extra clearance to get the axles back on, so I took out the long lower bolt that holds the control arms to the spindle.

Josh makes it sound so easy.

I'm going to do that when I do my trans swap.

+1
Also, when anybody installed a rear diff, what did you wish you had done differently?

It's pretty easy, but yeah if you're doing it for the first time, it might be a little tricky. Those stud bolts on the back of the diff can get in the way. Also, if you can lower the diff, you should be able to get enough clearance to pop off the cv axles from the stubs on the diff.

Sounds like a good excuse to put in a few ploy bushings. I think Whiteline has some for the diff. :D

I don't believe whiteline has diff bushings. They just have the subframe bushings.

I'll be putting the rear diff on my car when I put a tranny back in it.

I definately think it's a good idea. It'll give you a little project to work on until I can get my tranny out :)
