Drove over a 6" curb

Post by Splinter »

I was trying to get into a parking lot friday night, it was dark and pissing down. I turned into what I THOUGHT was the entrance, but there was actually a barrier there.

I actually seemed to get over it just fine, I got out and checked the curb for any scrapes, but I didnt see anything, even tho it make some noise when I went over it.

The car ran fine after, and I drove it home the next day with no problems. No fluid leaks when I got into it in the morning either.

Did I get away with it? Or is there anything else I should check?

Two words: Rally Heritage

The noise you heard may have been the suspension groaning in protest to being forced to go over a curb at speed. Drive it for a few days on familiar roads, in the dry if possible. If it seems to be the same, you probably avoided any immediate serious damage.

My car would have never made that curb. I only have 4.5 inches between the dif and the ground, so on my way over, I would have been ripping the rear diff off.

Uh, wouldn't your tires cause the rear diff to still be 4.5" off the top of the curb as you went over?

Not if you went over it diagonally. Seeing as we have independent rear suspensions, the dif does not move in tandem with the wheels. (it really doesn't move at all...)

I guess I just don't generally pull into parking lot entrances diagonally.

Well, Splinter said he was turning into a parking lot entrance which turned into a curb...I pictured it like this:

Oh, I know exactly what you mean, that is a nice visual though. :)

I just don't usually enter parking lots entrances at a 45 degree angle when turning 90 degrees. I would tend to have progressed much further through the turn radius by that time.

This is pretty much how it went down:
