Its not hard to wire the switch lines up to the motherboard. They're probably on a corner of the board, and labeled "Power Switch"

Keep an eye on the harddrive. It doesn't look like you've left a lot of cooling for it.

Is that foam conductive? Do you have an insulator between the foam and the motherboard?

THe ignition switches it on :D

Yea, I checked the foam with an ohmmeter, showed infinite ressistance

Oh, I know how the switch works..but he needs to have a switch to set off the circuit to make the computer go on.

Are you worried about static electricity with nonconductive foam?

The DC-DC powersupply has a neat little circuit that closes the power switch when the ACC is on, basically a little solid state relay, probably a transistor.

Good idea. I like that. I am a little worried about the foam but...I figure you're good enough of an electrician to know what will and what won't conduct.

I'm looking at upgrading this thing to a trunk-mounted Athlon XP 2800+

This 800mhz Epia just isn't cutting it for anything but straight MP3s

Is that a 64bit processor?

2800's aren't. You gotta go to 3200XP+ to get 64bit capability.

The 3200XP isn't 64 bit...

You can get 64 bit 2800s, at least you used to.

It depends on the core, not on the number.

The particular 2800 Im looking at isn't 64bit, it's just an XP. I have 64 bit in my desktop computer, but I certainly don't need it in my car.

3000 is the lowest you can go in the 64 bit. Socket 939.

So I've painted the console back to black until I get a replacement piece of trim from Blackbart
Image

There are still a few wires visible in the driver footwell, but I should get those cleaned up tomorrow.

This is what the screen looks like from the back seat, which will be nice for movies at the beach ;)
Image

Apart from the stuff in the footwell, this is the only wiring visible inside the passenger compartment. I have to pull up the carpet before I can hide this stuff (USB and VGA extension cables), so that wont be happening til the spring.
Image

I've pulled out the carpeting from the trunk. As you can see, it needs a cleaning if Im gonna leave it this way. This will allow me to bolt down the computer and sub so they dont go sliding around pulling out wiring if I decide to have some fun.
Image

And this is the wiring I still stumped as to how to make neat. I've done quite a bit so far, but I think some of it is just either completely un-hideable, or would require major surgey to fix.
Image

My only real concerns at this point are for the hard drive, being so close to the subwoofer. I'm going to try and build an elastic suspension system, similar to the one in my desktop, to try and dampen the big beats, but apart from that, I'm just going to have to keep a close eye on the SMART readings for the next few months to see if the drive is being damaged or not.

I'm also going to do what I can to try and mount the computer on its side, to give me a little more trunk space, Im just not sure how I can do it in such a way that it'll be secure.

Changing the computer again.

Switching to a Biostar M7NCG board, nForce2 based.

Ive been having some stability problems, most notably with an inability to come out of hibernation.

Im also switching to a mobile Athlon 2200, which runs at 45W, which means Ill be able to run it at full speed, unlike the 2800, which was underclocked.

Sweet. I just bought an 8inch monitor for the car. It isn't touchscreen but it has the VGA input and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg. It also has video inputs and has a built in TV tuner.

Picked up an AC/DC inverter too. Just need to snag me a wireless keyboard/mouse combo. Maybe wire up a fingerprint recognition system so that only I can start the car. It could also send me an e-mail or an instant message. Throw in some cameras so I can see who is breaking into my car.

Now thats anti-theft.

Put in GPS and have it upload its location to the server, so even if it does get stolen you know exactly where it is ;)
