Would allowing rain get on your injector caps cause richness

Post by douglas vincent »

So I have been having an atrocious time with richness that won't allow my wagon to even start. I have to keep the throttle 100% open while cranking and then hold it down to blow out all the gas. Has been lately taking 4-6 tries to get it started. But this doesnt happen everytime. Sometimes it starts right up.

So I changed the plugs and plug wires today, and noticed that my connectors were kinda filled with water (I have a rather large hole in my hood over injectors 1 and 3.). Think this might be the problem?

I sprayed them out with eclectrical cleaner. Currently running perfect.

What's the condition of your coolant temp sensor?

have you tried putting di-electric grease on the connectors?

Now that I think about it, this engine was in my wifes old wagon. AND!!!!!!!!! It had a hell of a time starting sometimes!!!!!!!!!

I will be changing the temp sensor out tommorrow!

I can't really think of a way the injector caps being wet could cause them to stay open too long... But water in the temperature sensor maybe could, so maybe you guys are on the right track.

Be sure to smear dielectric grease into the connector, too.

I changed the temp sensor as well as cleaned as many connections as I could.

I am running very well now. Power really picks up over 4k now on boost, almost like timing advances!

As for the condition of the old temp sensor, I don't know but it was BROKEN when I removed it, broken as in in two pieces held together by the wire that runs into the point. However, I don't know if I broke it when removing (VERY EASY TOO DO!) or if it was slightly cracked and I just finished it off.

Great!

I don't remember the sensor being especially fragile, so it does seem like yours was at least a little damaged.
