1995 Legacy L with 226k Purchase y/n?
Alright, so I guess the appreciation of subaru's has rubbed off on my gf she is looking for a used car with reliability in mind. She has found a legacy she likes but it has around 226k miles on it. The fuel guage doesn't work on it and it supposedly has a CV boot that needs to be replaced, timing belt will be due for replacement, I will find out what else might be up once I go and see it with her tomorrow and inspect the gaskets, check idle, shifting, etc.
The guy is asking like $3600, KBB rates in good condition ~$2900 but given the parts that need replacing and the time it wil take me to repair those components I'm thinking more of an offer like ~$2600 I don't think an aftermarket stereo increases value of a car at all myself.
Opinions on what I should check for / or should i probably pass the word that she may want to find something else
let me know what you all think

With the miles and the work, I wouldn't give him more then 2k unless it's in super good condition.
If you do all the associated maintenance with the timing belt, (water pump, seals, etc) and cv joint, you're looking about 200-300 bucks in parts. The fuel gauge is probably the sender. You should be able to remove the pump from the tank and sand off the oxidation that is keeping the gauge from working correctly.

That all depends on the condition of the car, how much time and money you want to put into it initially, and how mechanically inclined you are.

well I have a 99 legacy myself figured I could do some of the work myself... but more I think about it I think it would likely be better to look elsewhere
talked to shop about repairs and they quoted almost like $1000 if I did it all with their shop... wether that would be worth it is really questionable....
but I passed that info to my gf so she probably will not go with it i smy guess becuase she didn't like the idea of offering like 2k for it since she thinks that is too littl eto offer the guy *i know I have no idea either* but hey understanding women sometimes is hard enough

yeah I know...some women are a little weird about money & cars at times.....this one girl in houston had a turbo, and wanted way to much for it, and it had TONS of problems with it.

I was seeing similar cars for around $2500-3K with way fewer miles in this area. Most a bit over 100k miles. My ex was considering it but ended up getting a Honda
I would get the newest 2.2 liter with the lowest miles and best maintenance you can find. those will be the ones that will last another 10 years. 2.5 liter=> NOT

That beer you are drinking cost more than my car
if you tell us where you are, that puts a lot more eyes out there
this one took me 5 minutes of looking, a much better deal than above
