OBD1 and OBD2 software?????

Post by edrach »

Found this on Ebay recently. Great idea if it works.

I wasn't too thrilled with the response to my two questions (1. Will it work with my '91 n/a Legacy and my '97 n/a Impreza? "modules available for them models." 2. Do your have wiring info for connection to the laptop? "Simple matter of hooking to the car and the laptop USB port." Third question was "Do you have wiring information for that?" I'm still waiting for that reply.

I would invest in this if I thought it would work but having read through the 10 pages of the thread started by Vikash, I'm really very skeptical.

It's possible in principle, but it seems unlikely that one entity actually compiled all the necessary information about every OBD-I engine management system. But it's possible.

Did he offer any indication how much the "modules for them models" would cost?

The implication I got from his reply was that the two cars I asked about ('91 Legacy and '97 Impreza) were included in the CDs that he offered. I was more distressed about the vague response to the wiring question. It's not a lot of money and I'm almost tempted to buy them and send them to you for your evaluation; maybe this guy has something worthwhile.

Realize that the software is just half of the system... the auction does not include any hardware. Presumably these modules are that hardware.

If you're hoping he can describe to you how to make the hardware, I think you're going to be disappointed... It's unlikely to be something very simple or cheap.

If you want me to take a look at it, I'd be glad to. But I think you're best off just using my free scantool for your Legacy and figuring out something else for your Impreza; there is at least one free OBD-II scantool out there (last I checked it didn't work right with a 97 Impreza, but that may have changed in the past four years).

I took the comment about modules to mean software specific to the make/model of the car. The hardware that the seller is so vague about is the wiring for the plug and USB connector. I could certainly be wrong about that but I'm intriqued by it. By the way is there any way to get your scantool to display CEL codes? ---ed---

Well, unless it's incredibly flexible, the hardware has to be different for different makes.

This could very well just be a pirated version of the software half of a Snap-On scantool or something.

No, right now my scantool doesn't read trouble codes... I didn't incorporate that because it's fairly different from the rest of the functionality and because it's pretty easy to just use the black and green connectors; on my car I've even hooked them to switches on the dash.

Pardon me for being naive, How did you wire in the black and green connectors? It would certainly make it easier for me to pull the codes; I'm pretty sure it's not a serious issue with the car since it seems to be running normally (other than a slower than normal idle) but I'm trying to isolate/resolve the problem and it would help to have ready access to the codes to see if I'm what I'm doing is working to remove the codes one at a time. Again, I have a '91 n/a Legacy. Thanks again for putting up with me. ---ed---

Ed,

You just need to tie into the wiring for the black & green connectors. Wire both ends of the black connectors up to a simple toggle switch. When the switch is not on, the connectors are "disconnected" When you flip the switch, it's like connecting the diagnostic connectors.

So you could do this for both the black & green connectors and you wouldn't have to get under the dash each time to hook up the diagnostic connectors.

Yeah, what Josh said. It's pretty simple.

You can use standard 1/4" quick-disconnect terminals to connect to the stock connectors.

well i checked out the aution as well and i asked the same questions about how they could guarantee that it would work with my car and so forth... i also asked if there was schmeatics included for any cables i may need to make to interface with my car but i did not get all the answers i was looking for... but this IS what i got in reply...
Hi and thanks for your question, the software will work for your car 100%,There are alot of different programs on the disk, like autotec, digmoto, carsoft etc that work with different models and OBD compatibility. You will need to buy a hardware cable that suits your diagnostic port and its a simple matter of pluging to your usb port in your laptop,I have no hardware for sale at the minute, sorry. If however you do buy this software and have any problems with your model i will give you a full refund. If you check my feedback you'll see that i have numerous of these packages and never had any problems.I am an honest ebayer.Hope this is of help to you. Many thanks

Hm. If I had to guess, I'd say it sounds like it's just a collection of pirated copies of the software halves of various third-party scantool packages.
