Here we go again

Post by irishsetter »

I had codes 24 35 44. So I decided to take off the IAC valve and clean it(starting with code 24 IAC). I got it back together today and the IAC code has cleared and so has 44 but I know have 31 throttle control and 35 purge control. Where is the purge control at and whats up with the throttle control. By the way the car runs good but I have never have cleared the codes so I don't know what is normal for running.

purge soleniod wont affect drivability. Im not sure what car you have but, its most likely under the #3 intake runner.

It's a 91 turbo 5spd with about 175k. I've met him personally...

31 is the throttle position sensor. For whatever reason, it's not happy. You can try getting a different throttle body from a junkyard and putting it on. That might clear your code.

35 is as the others have said, purge control solenoid. The EVAP emissions system gathers gasoline fumes from your tank and deposits them in the intake manifold for consumption by the engine. The purge control valve controls the rate and time at which these fumes are deposited. They frequently fail, my car had a CEL with this code when I got it, and my friend's 91 turbo has the same code. I drove my car for over a year with this problem, and he's driven his for over 2 years I believe with this problem. The valve sits right under the passenger side of the intake manifold. It's a little tricky to get to on a nonturbo, but it's a downright pain-in-the-balls to get to on a turbo, as you have no choice but to either remove the turbo or the intake manifold. If you're feeling ambitious, you can do that and replace the valve, but if you don't feel like it, you can still sleep easy at night knowing that it won't cause your car to blow up.

Anyway, if you need any other help, irishsetter, don't hesitate to PM me and I will try to meet with you and help you out when my schedule allows.

Thanks a lot subyluvr it was cool that you may it out to the race maybe next time you could run. As far as the throtle sensor this code did not pop up until I rebuilt my IAC and take everything apart and put it back together. I am also trying to deal with only 10 inches of vac. I must have a leak some where.

Interesting. You might want to check into that first, and then go code-hunting later.

Being a turbo, there's a lot more places to have a vacuum leak than an NA. The best thing to do is simply listen very closely all around the intake area for a whistling sound. Unfortunately, it can be anywhere from the intake hose coming off the MAF, to the intake manifold gaskets.
