Which ic system?

Post by 93Leg-c »

I'm trying to figure out which IC system to install in my '93 AT ss. The car will be used mostly in the AZ desert in city driving, rural driving, and open interstate driving with some long climbs up mountains (like 5 to 10 minute climbs). The car mostly will be seeing hot temperatures--90-116 degrees F though it will see some sub-freezing weather in the winters. I'm planning to install a td05 16g monster port from Deadbolt (not sure yet if it's going to be the std, big, or super wheel).

Any thoughts on which system--AWIC, TMIC, or FMIC--may give me optimal performance? I want the quickest pickup possible in city driving along with ample highway and interstate driving and a system that will keep cool on those long uphill mountain climbs (although this ranks last in priority).

I'd appreciate any feedback! Thanks!

Considering you live in AZ and plan on a larger turbo in the future, I think a FMIC would be your best choice. There would be no heat sink from the IC being in the engine bay, and the hot temps of Az would make the AWIC less effective.

The fmic would be the best option--no matter what the climate, season or
weather.

The next step for me on the fmic is for a high pressure water spray--
more like a fogger for extra performance, er, when needed. On the long
mountain grades( the first one out of Vancouver amounts to almost an
hour at speed) I drop the boost from 12 to 8. No probs even with a full
load and two canoes on the roof at 85F. No need for the spray

The 4eat was fine, but I was worried that it might fail going up the pass
or out in the boonies so I had the tranny "built".

Before doing the tranny, in your case, I'd add a tranny oil cooler in series
after the cooler in the rad tank. I put one in behind the fog light location
on the driver's side ---the oil lines are right there. 8)

FMIC=best.

Unless you do a really nice AWIC setup with dry ice in a tank in the trunk ect.. That could be sweet for shorter bursts. The fmic is still best overall though.

Thanks guys!

So, if the FMIC would be the best option, what is the minimal size FMIC and pipe diameter that would be recommended? And what sizes would be "preferred"?

And, out of a thirst for knowing, how much difference would the FMIC setup have over the TMIC or AWIC setups?

Oh yeah, a trans cooler is already in the works to be installed. I appreciate the location suggestion, Subtle. Finding the right cooler and then mounting it will definitely be a learning project for me, too.

BTW, what do you mean by you had your tranny "built"?

The dry ice tank set up in the trunk sounds intriguing but that's not an option for me as I need the FULL capacity of the trunk for my work equipment. Not even a rear strut bar has room to fit.

I guess heat sinking of the TMIC/AWIC in AZ would be a considerable factor, huh? (especially in the middle of summer when overnight temps are 100+ degrees)
