ss swap into 95 impreza

Post by willmoodom »

Here's my info. IMy car is a 95 impreza L with 2.2,4eat & awd. I just got a ss engine,transaxle and rear end from a 92 donor w/4eat
I understand that 90-91 gearing was 390 and after 411. Correct me if I'm wrong. What I want to know is if that gearing for the 92 is 411 what late model 4eat can I use that's geared for 411 and strong enough to withstand mild HP output like a max of 350Hp. I want to keep the auto hookup. Also what are some inexpensive piggyback options available? Thanks BTW everything cost me less than $300. That includes complete engine with intake, all wiring and sensors, tranny, axle front and rear hubs and callipers, rear end driveshaft. Ofcourse this was a pick and pull yard and some things are going to need a rebuild. but I got time.

The 90-91 n/a legacies had a 4.111 final drive ratio.
The 92-94 n/a AT legacies had a 3.90 final drive ratio.
The 92-94 n/a MT legacies had a 4.111 final drive ratio.
The 91-94 turbo AT & MT legacies had a 3.90 finald ratio.

So the 92 turbo legacy tranny you have has a final drive ratio of 3.90, not 4.111

Thanks for the correction. So what I have and what all factory ss cars came with was a 390. From your info. on trannies that will have the 390, Will any of these hold up compared to the stock tranny?

The SS tranny is going to hold up better then the n/a tranny.

I'd say 350 hp is a little more then "mild".

If you spend the money, you could get the tranny rebuilt to handle that kind of power though.

Just reread the years on your post. Are there no trannies in the later years with 390 gearing? I'm checking on this becuase finding a excellent tranny from 94 or earlier especially out of a ss is almost impossible. Is there any way to check the condition of a tranny before installing? I know there isn't but thought I'd ask anyway.

I think some of the 1.8 imprezas may have come with 3.90, but they're not going to be any beefier.

You're better bet, if you want a newer trans is to just swap to a different final drive ratio, and get the corresponding rear diff to match. Unless you're set on that ratio.

I'm not set on those gears but money is a factor. I guess it's safe to say to rebuild the ss tranny probably will cost as much as a V8 rebuild. Am I wrong? What's the FDR on the usdm 1st gen wrx's? Do they have the lsd rear too? I'm looking for a comparable auto to the ss 4eat that's cost effective. And yes 350 is high but that number seemed safe. I'd rather it handle 350 and not make it than to not have it and get close to it. durability facture. Thanks for the help with this.

Are you dedicated to staying automatic? Why not swap in a manual tranny?

There was never a 1st gen WRX in the USA. The 92 SS only had a LSD as an option, and I've never seen one with it.

The parts book I have doesn't show it even as an option on any of the 92-94 models. Only the 91 got it. So it may be one of those weird subaru things.....I don't know....

What I meant by 1st gen is 1st model imported to united states. As of right now i do want to keep the auto in. You know one project at a time. First I want to rebu8ild the engine, install and get it running right. I guess it's possible the previous owner installed it. Suppose I was luckier than I thought. I got that with the brakes and axles for $60. But it was a b**** getting it out! Anyone? 4eat as strong as ss model or better w/390 gearing?
