instument cluster fire !!

my 90 ls dash almost started on fire th other day. smoke rolled outta the dash. I took the dash apart to find that where the vss signal comes from the cable area (rear of cluster) had burnt to hell. I followed the burnt trace to a black wire that plugs into the cluster. I assume it's the vss because of it's location and the fact that now my cruise doesn't work. Is this a common problem? I did a quick search but didn't find anything. I am hoping that just a cluster swap will fix it but I'm scared it burnt because something else shorted out. Any one deal with or hear of this one ?

I will have another cluster soon. The only thing that worries me is that something else shorted and the printed circuit on the cluster acted as a fuse. I don't want to put another in and smoke it. Or have my roo start on fire ! Eek. I guess I will start testing eveything related to this wire first before replacement. My fuel gauge is stuck on full. My cruise doesn't work. And my blinkers work properly but both indicators light up no matter which way I flip them
