Ive been running windows since 3.1
Ive had a few frustrating problems, but not as many as I've had on Macs (at school and such), and I havent spent anywhere near as much time on Macs.
Most of the issues I've had with Macs werent viruses or spyware, they were problems designed into the Mac.
Windows XP is pretty great as long as you spend some time learning how to use it. Come on guys, computers are like cars. Buying a Mac because your windows PC doesnt work the way you want it to is like buying one of those VW all-wheel traction control cruise control auto-GPS things because you don't know how to drive. Guess what? You're still gonna crash.
If necessary, take a computer course at the local community college, and just excercise some common sense when you're surfing. I havent had a virus or spyware attack in 3+ years.
Anyone ever had an audio popup before?

whats the base price for a MAC these days? my guess is about 4 times that of a Base model PC. in my opinion, not worth paying that price. I just buy a 500 dollar new laptop every 1.5 years.

Macs aren't as expensive as you think. My laptop was $1k. I used Windows 98SE and my sister has more problems with XP than me with 98SE. Computers aren't cars - they should just work and not have problems ... actually I've never had a car as unreliable as my climate-controlled environment computers. Junk is what they are. With a car you turn a key and they go in most cases, if a computer can't be the same way it's trash. If you could figure out the problems (not virus related) I've had with Windows shit software I'll give you the old wagon, but it had the computer geeks stumped so I've got no worries. I also have stuff of value on my computer, not porn or video games, so worries of crashing or inability to extract information is unacceptable. I don't trade cars in every few years and neither should I have to a computer. In fact the only things I've ever owned that weren't long-lived were PCs, a Nintendo, and a POS Datsun 260Z I sold off (which is still around).
But I guess clicking on an application and expecting it to work without randomly dropping drivers or losing files so certain features no longer work is too much. Must be the Yugo or VW owners' faults when their cars suck, too. The only mistake is buying substandard product.
SLIGHTLY RELATED RANT WARNING:
Unfortunately, finding product anywhere that doesn't suck is getting harder and harder thanks to the consumerist Wall-Mart mentality. I don't need to buy new things every couple years to feel fulfilled so I'd rather they just last even if that means paying more up front. This is usually no longer a choice as people wouldn't know quality if it got shoved up their ass. "$200 for a DVD player!? Why pay that when I can get this POS made by child slave labor in China for $30? Saves me money to spend on a huge library of trash movies to go with it. Just keep me entertined and pull the wool over my eyes."
I'm a minority now and I have trouble facing that - even Mercedes-Benz has abandoned customers like me. Given the opportunity this dinosaur will stomp some human ass before it goes extinct. Now where's my C4 ...

Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.

I got bored earlier so I FDISK'ed the Dell and installed a copy of XP pro SP2 I have for sale in the parts shed.
Smooth install and I like what SP2 brings to the table. I didn't even have SP1 on the previous run.
Upgraded to Norton 2005 and I am content. I had backed up all my files to a networked HD and I am in the process of bringing them back over.
