What to do for an NA to get up to 220hp ~ wrx?

Post by cyberbackpacker »

Sorry if this is covered, but I am not finding anything in my searches. Maybe my search terms are not clear enough. Basically what can we NA guys do to get the usdm ej22 up to usdm ej20 hp's? Is it possible without spending what it would cost to buy a WRX?

Is 200-220hp expecting too much out of this engine?

Thanks in advance for the assistance, and I apologize if this a redundant post.

Unless you are willing to spend large sums of time and money, it's nothing but a pipe dream. One of the guys has a supercharger setup and it putting out 155 whp, but Doug's the man and has done tons of custom work to get where he is. There really isn't much you can do to get extra power out of the 22E. You're best bet is to just tune it up and keep it healthy.

Keep searching too, it's been covered a fair bit. Search the engine forum specifically.

I sold a guy a JDM EJ20 DOHC that he put in place of his worn EJ22 and he loves it.

I don't know if he moded it or not but to my knowledge it is a closed or semi-closed deck engine because it was a twin turbo engine from Japan.

I can get you a twin turbo EJ20 pretty cheap but you would have to buy a postal wagon to put it in. (I swear I'm going to do that someday. Except I am going to buy a postal wagon and a clip from Japan so I get everything needed to do the swap perfectly)

you can turbo the NA, but youre better off getting a ej20g. 200PS ej20g's are real common, and a pretty "easy" swap. 220PS is slightly less common. they are often called "ej20t" by engine sellers. a lot of them still have the factory AWIC on them, and a 3" TBE and more boost will get some good power.
just the engine with accessories and some cut wires runs $400-700, complete front clips for $1500-2500.

If you wanted to put an EJ20 (minus the TT) all you have to do is bring over a few sensors from the EJ22 and lenghten a few wires on the wiring harness as the EJ20 is slightly different.

You also have to reuse the A/C comp as it is different then the USDM A/C comp. USDM A/C comp won't fit on the EJ20. You might be able to use the USDM A/C bracket or you could just do away with the A/C if it is speed you are after.

If he wants to be able to get good HP from his car then he might want to consider it.

Single cams....dual cams...hmmmm.

Open deck......closed deck....I wonder?

You can bet your bottom dollar I will be putting an EJ20 into a gen1 as soon as I can scrape up the chedda.

Well basically I have a 92L with the 2.2 that needs to be replaced. As such, if I have to do the work of pulling an engine, I figure good time to upgrade! Would love to keep the wiring simple as possible (don't we all) and I am open to viable alternatives that will still let me pass CARB emissions standards.

I have been reading here, nasioc, and i-club trying to gather what I can.

Also have a 97 Outback Wagon with the DOHC 2.5l that is also a good candidate for some special attention.

Don't want a race car, but would love to have the extra power/acceleration. I have driven a few wrx's (no sti's) and would love to have similar type of power.

BTW when I speced HP ratings for the different engines, do they mean chp or whp-- ie ej22t 160hp. Is that 160chp or 160whp?

Thanks again.

definitely, matt monson has some crazy stuff he's done with that engine. More performance parts too.

That would all depend on if he wants consistent HP or a fling with HP every now and then.

Don't put the squeeze on an EJ22!! Maybe one with an EJ22T block.

There's nothing wrong with the EJ22E. Just because it's open-deck doesn't make it a weak motor.

Search Matt Monson's recent posts, he recently put Delta cams on an EJ22E, and with some EM and proper fueling, he got ~160-170hp out of it.

If you can put some different pistons in it, and maybe mill the heads ever-so-slightly to bump your CR up a bit along with the stuff I just mentioned (the EM should help you rev it a bit higher too, maybe 7500rpm), you could indeed come close to the 200hp mark.

It's just that upgrading an EJ22T is so much easier and cheaper, with better results :)

Word. There's nothing like a dialed turbo car.
If you still want to stay NA (really means 'Ninny-Arse' :) ) then I must get cliche' on you:

The previous statment was made by a complete poser. I only say this becayse he was N/A for a long ass time and only now does he rock the boost.

I bet he tweaks too hard on the EJ22T and "Blows the welds on the intake manifold" and then his passengers side floor board flys off violently.

So... reading all over the place about this topic from here to nasioc to sl-i.net, etc...

If I can find/use a ej22t short block with the 22e heads and manifold, getting to the 200hp mark seems much more feasible.

If I go that route, would I not have to swap/splice wire harnesses ecu's if I go to perfect power for EM?

You are correct except for the wiring part. The EJ22T block is a closed deck so it is stronger and more open to being modded. It can take the pressures of boosting or putting the squeeze on it. I don't know exactly how much but it's more then the 8 or 9 PSI the EJ22 can take.

I don't know this as fact from self experience but I did alot of reading when I got my legacy and I thought the same thing you are thinking. I started the EJ20 DOHC swap into my legacy but got so far as the wiring swap and gave up. I sold that engine to a guy in texas who put it into his legacy and he loves it. I wish I had kept it and not given up.

The EJ20 I got was from Japan and it was originally a TT so the potential was great.

Look what you started!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!

He's got an EJ20G ;-)

Subyluvr, is that figure on the 2.2L N/A whp or chp? (I'm assuming chp)

Would be a shame to use an EJ22T block for a NON-turbo application. . .
