power mode on off on off....

Post by 92ss »

I've got a 92ss 4eat. The tranny shifts hard and doesn't slip and has 127k mi on it. When I'm cruising barely on throttle at operating temp the power light will come on and and it drops a gear. then goes out and upshifts in like 2 second intervals. up down up down. wtf is this ? bad tcu? funky tps input into the tcu? I have no CEL or tranny code being thrown. Anyone have any insight? Thanks in advance !

Also I just drove it again and it seems to happen more often when cruising at lower speeds in town.

It does seem like it could be a funky TPS signal. If there are breaks in the sensor's conductor it could make the signal jump around. Check it with a voltmeter, or maybe try my scantool?

I haven't had a chance to start troubleshooting this yet but I figure I would post exactly how it acts now that I've got it down. Only once I have been driving around for awhile. Has only happened at highway speeds once. While cruising at 30 the power light will come on and there is no change to anything. Then sometimes it will come on and it will drop a gear for a couple seconds and go back up to 4th. Then sometimes it comes on and drops 2 gears at this point on the 2 gear drops I can hear one, possibly two relays in the passenger kick clicking then it shifts back into 4th after a very short period of time. Wierd. I know that this tranny is fine. I think it's a goofy tcu. If the tps was retarded then the ecu would not be too pleased either. Unless there is a break on only the line going to the tcu. Or maybe it runs inot one and then to the other? I don't know as I haven't looked at the schematic yet . Just figured I'd post what I know so far. I can get it to happen whenever I want if I cruise around for a while. And it goes in stages like that, first just the light , then the light and a gear, then the light and two gears and relays(s) clicking. Anyone know what the related relays in the pass kick would do or be for on the tranny related side of things?

Could this have something to do with the cuise control? I know the CC computer and the CC relay are in the pass kick panel.

What about something that has to do with the throttle? I can get my pwr mode to kick in by just gingerly tapping my accelerator. Maybe there's something wrong with the throttle position.
