Anyone running a T3 turbo?
so my second Toyota CT-26 turbo decided it doesn't like to hold oil anymore. I guess that's what I get for sticking turbos with 150k+ miles on them on my Subaru. Anyway, I'm looking for a new turbo and I think I might go with a T3/T4. They can be had new or rebuilt dirt cheap and can make 400+hp kinda easy. I'm thinking of a 57 trim with 0.63 AR hot side. It might be a little big though. I have some T3 flnges around here somewhere too, so that's one less thing I need to buy/make. I'm wondering if anyone here has run one of these turbos and how it drove. I just don't want this thing to lag till 4k or anything like that. Spool on my CT-26 is damn good and this turbo isn't to much bigger and it should have a more efficient hot side anyway, so I don't think it'll be a problem. Feedback is always good though.

what size is it (specs) how does it drive? Is it laggy at all? That's really my biggest concern. I don't think it'll be a problem, but a little feedback can't hurt.

My car is probably a lot different than yours. With the 4.11 transmission, the turbo kicks in at about 4k rpm in first gear if you don't launch and hits very hard. I think its a 50 trim but i'll have to look at it. The car is sitting at home now due to the clutch cable snapping when i was driving yesterday. I don't know what setup you have but you might have a lot of work if you want to fit a garrett. The kit i have is all aftermarket, it uses an Invidia downpipe and custom upipe with a 38mm external wastegate and it wasn't very cheap. But it definately holds boost to redline and I have yet to get beat by anything when its actually running correctly.

I think, if you're asking these questions, you haven't adequitly researched your thoughts on this turbo.sammydafish wrote:what size is it (specs) how does it drive? Is it laggy at all? That's really my biggest concern. I don't think it'll be a problem, but a little feedback can't hurt.
Start with a book called Maximum Boost by Corky Bell.

I don’t get where you come to that conclusion. He didn’t say what specific turbo he is running and T3/T4s come is such a myriad of flavors and sizes. I'm interested in feedback because it seems like most people tend to run kinda small turbos on Subaru’s, despite the not so small displacement for a 4 cyl. The turbo I’m looking at running pretty well sized to the displacement, but I wonder if the relatively short stroke of the EJ22 is why people tend to run turbos with small hot sides. I don’t want a turbo that I need to swing the tacho past the 4k mark to see some boost.
By the way, Mr. Bell's book was terrible, he assumes too much and much of his math is flawed. He fails to explain why things are and give far too many 'rules of thumb’ it’s not a bad book for a beginner, but is far from the bible people claim it to be. It’s not so much what’s in the book that’s bad; it’s what’s not in it.
Hanz Heltzler (or some similar spelling) has a few books on studying engineering concepts of modern engines. One of his books is specific to forced induction and he talks a lot about the aftermarket. It’s a much better read in my opinion.
