Aaahhhhh sweet release.

Post by Tleg93 »

Thanks!

I'm finally in a place where I can breath with my '93 AWD 5 speed. My new 2.5" exhaust is on, my codes are all cleared, my new wheels are on, and retarded some decay in my wheel wells although more work is needed. So far I've accomplished a lot for starters. I've still got this annoying churning noise in my HVAC unit when I turn it off but it's not an emergency.

- disconnected the snorkus --- thanks guys
- Put on a new 2.5" midpipe and muffler.
- Put on some PR racing wheels and futura HR touring tires.

I've noticed some power gains after all this and I found I can 'keep up' with a friend's '92 sport sedan (except on steep grades probably). Right now I'm looking towards what is next and I'm not sure. I think I might be done with my NA for a while since I can't think of anything at the moment.

The other day I was looking the net around for a turbo and turned up a hit on a '91 legacy turbo at a dealership in town. They wanted $1100 for it and said it had 135,000  (must have been sitting). I was all freaking hyped cuz I just got rid of my buick and had some money. I went down there and much to my dismay found they sold it a couple days beforehand. I coulda freakin cried.

I just wanted to thank anyone who's helped me out with advice in the past and I hope I can contribute somehow in the future. thanks again!!

As far as what's next I'm kinda lookin at a lightweight Exedy flywheel. My clutch is on it's last leg anyway. Other than that I don't see what else I can do to improve performance. Putting a turbo engine in my car just doesn't seem economical to me right now. I would rather buy a second auto and fix it up. Anyway, I'm open to suggestions if anyone has any.

Aw, that sucks about missing the sale. That could have been a nice car especially for the price. Even if the body were falling apart you could transplant stuff with your car.

You can keep up with your friend's turbo? Is it a 4EAT or something?

Some other smaller modifications you can do to improve your naturally aspirated engine a little more are things like a capacitive discharge ignition booster like the MSD DIS-2, a Diamond coil pack and performance wires like Magnecors, freer-flowing air filter element like a K&N, a lightened flywheel, or lightened pulleys... Then there are more controversial things like removing the MAF screen, using an open-element cone-type air filter, bypassing the coolant lines through the throttle body, and installing underdrive pulleys.

Or do you already have some of this stuff done? Some of it doesn't give you a lot of bang for the buck, but they're options...

How does the new exhaust sound?

About the "churning noise," does it sound kind of like a rhythmic clicking, maybe twice a second? My car does that too... Someone told me that a bad blower resistor pack can cause that, so I've been planning on getting a replacement resistor pack at some point to try it out.

Was your friends car towing a trailer? Haha. Anyways, saving up for a Sport Sedan is the smart thing to do. Otherwise make sure any nice bits you wanna put on your car will transplant into the Sport Sedan.

Exedy 12.8 lb flywheel is best. Same as the STi unit, they are the manufacturer. I absolutely LOVE mine. Just today I was thinking about how sweet it was. Never makes me stall, etc. but when you blip it on downshifts, revs climb like butter. climb like butter... hmmmm. i think i just coined a new phrase! :D

Hehe... I've never seen butter climb. I've seen a butter fly, but...

Sorry.

I really feel the need for one of these Exedy flywheels. I hate how long it takes me to rev match when shifting (both up and down). I lose all my boost!

 No I wasn't pulling a trailer  Padishars N/A is fast! We were screwing around leaving a friends house one day and we were running pretty even. This is while my o2 sensor wasn't working and my car wasn't running very well however. My car has some issues(MAF codes won't clear) I fixed the o2 sensor so it might not be quite as close now  Padishars ride is coming along nicely especially with the new wheels and exhaust. Looks good.

Exhaust sounds loud

Post by Tleg93 »

Ooops! sorry I didn't reply sooner. The exhaust I had put on is pretty loud. The place that put it on didn't bother to put a resonator on and it gets pretty damn loud around 3000 rpm's. It does sound sweet at idle and around 4000 rpm's though.

Honestly, a awd L 5 speed sedan shouldnt lag too far behind a turbo wagon. 300 pounds and that tranny will really sap the extra 30 hp or whatever the turbo has. I would think it would come down to the driver.

This is stock for stock, of course, a turbo has sooooo much more potential...
