Replaced the timing belt ,car won't start!

Post by Rick Grant »

My 1991 Legacy L fwd (non turbo) won't start !

The belt broke so I replaced it according to the Subaru Legacy Haynes manual (aligning the marks accordingly) and it still isn't starting.
It is getting fuel, air and spark! I am wondering if it is not timed correctly but I was told it would not have spark (because of the crank sensor) my next guess would be that it is not getting enough fuel ( the fuel pump shuts off after 2sec if it gets a code from ECU). I really want to get this great vehicle running once again any help with my problem would be greatly appreciated!

More than likely you "think" you lined up the correct marks.

On the cams, you use the hatch mark, not the arrows.

On the crank pulley, there are TWO marks, you use the one on the back, that lines up right next to the mark on the block.

Yeh, its really easy to make this mistake. On the crank pulley you line up the mark, not the arrow. The arrow shows TDC.

Yes, this is a very easy mistake to make. I've change my timing belt quite a few times and I still make that mistake every now and then. The nice thing is that I know exactly what is wrong when it doesn't start. The bad thing is that I have to tear the thing back apart.
