Help with sparkplug wires!

Post by Imprezive »

Ok, here is my dilema. I bought a legacy ss with an ej20g swapped into it. And they used the ej22t ecu and wiring harness so they had to switch to a central coil pack for the ignition wires. I need to move the coilpack because it hits the hood, so I need some custom plug wires.

Does anyone have any good suggestions? Its a DOHC and so the sparkplug wires that are on it have a long connector to go onto the spark plug.

I checked out magnecor and they were really expensive.

? That's where the stock coil pack is located. Can you move it forward or back on the manifold? Magnecor's really the only way to go. Anything else won't last long or work as well. I've had NGKs and 'lifetime warranty' cheapos and none lasted longer than a year. Magnecor's have been great for the last few years. I'm not sure if the waste spark ignition wears out wires sooner or what, but I've never gone through so many wires with any other car. Of course, I've gone through most other things with other cars. I can't remember if the EAs ate wires like this. I remember eating rotors and caps.

Yeah, I've tried everything to make that damn coilpack fit, I guess I'll have to go with some megnecors. Those things are expensive though!

The stock manifold is shaped to hold the stock coil pack in such a way that it will clear the hood.

Lke Steve says, Magnecors actually are worth the money because you never have to buy another set of wires ever again. And Magnecor will custom-make you any set of wires you want.

It will not fit on the manifold, this engine must sit a little bit higher because its an ej20g instead of an ej22t

The block mounts should be the same, the likely issue is the different manifold must sit higher due to the DOHC or some other design issue. Not a problem with the original coil-on-plug, of course.

for about $25, you can get an accel wire kit. I did the same conversion, and this is what I used. The wires are plenty long...just cut them to proper lengtn.

Cutting spark plug wires to length...?

I was not aware that was a valid procedure.

Accell has a custom wire kit. comes with spark plug and coil wires, wire ends, boots, and a tool to crimp the ends to the wires. just cut the wires to the approoriate length, crimp the ends on. add boots and install.

Neat - that would be what is required to make something like that happen. So $25 for custom wires, huh?

How do they compare to the magnecores in terms of how they hold up against our extra wasted spark wear?

I put about 10k miles on them with no problem (sold car). Never had magnecores, so I can't compare, but they are of good quality. The ones I had were 8mm, I believe.

Yep, the EJ20G engine intake manifold will not sits the coil pack, all you have to do is to move it forward to near the AC pump or alternator. I moved the coil to the Alternator and redo my spark plug wire.
The way I did is buy a roll of MSD wire then take off your old set of spark plug wire and modify it, cut both end with boot and the inside clip, mearsure the length and cut each wire , lable it and then clamp the both end with boot and put it back in, it just cost me $65 Cad of the roll of the MSD wire (its good enough for 2 4 cyclinder engine) and it did make the different.
Worth to DIY.
Hope it helps!

What years are the EJ20G that are giving problems?
My best guess is they are 94 and newer, and that is the reason.
If they were 89-93 they should fit fine, ciorrect?
