Helix 3" Turbo Back Exhaust Installed

Post by All_talk »

I figured I'd go ahead and post a thread...

Helix 3" polished Stainless, cast bellmouth, no cats, center glasspack resonator and large straight through can at the back... you could drop a tennis ball in at the bellmouth and it would shoot out the end (Hmm... sounds fun, now how could I rig that up, lol). I payed $450 for it... just gotta love WRX hand-me-downs.

The pipe extender is not stainless, 4" long section of 3" pipe and some flanges I made from 3/8" plate. Also made a thrid gasket from very soft 0.075" aluminum sheet, I've done this before and it works great.

I had to twist the hangers around quite a bit (used the torch). And all the bending in the world wouldn't make the foward hanger on the axle back reach so I built an extension like a U-bolt to reach down to the hanger. But I think some people just dont use the that hanger.

It might have worked out as well or even better if I had put the extension between the mid and tail pipe.

Its pretty loud  Truthfully its just a hair to loud for me, I may end up cutting off the silly 4 1/2" tip (which I dont really like the look of) and weld a smaller tip on it like 2 1/2" to reduce the volume a little... dont know yet. At steady freeway cruise (75mph) there is a bit of a low drone but you dont have to talk loud to get over it, stereo will easily drown it out, but you can still feel it a little. Steep uphill or heavy throttle bring out the monster.

On the up side... the tone of the pipe is simply beautiful, very low and a great growl, the sound at 6000rpm full throttle is nothing short of spectacular. Power is up across the board, turbo spools faster and the engine breaths better in the top end, widened the useable power band quite a bit. And seems to have picked up a mile or two per gallon in fuel economy.

Nice job. That exhaust looks really new - what a steal.

Yeah, I want to make my exhaust tip more inconspicuous too. I prefer to go unnoticed.

If you change your muffler I might be interested in your current one...

My system is a bit quiet for my liking, and I am 20 so I can morally justify having a raucous sounding car!

Is that mated to the stock turbo or an upgrade? Looks really nice.

Chuck on a $30 glasspak, sounds great. Not ricey at all. Even my budy who hates imports said it sounded pretty good.

I did that-too quiet. Lasted a couple months this time. I chopped it off when I put my new Walbro in. Straight pipe w/no cats is the only way to go.

Actually, I'm thinking of switching from my 2.5" to 3" with a resonator mid-way with nothing else. I like that idea. 8)

Thanks for the good words guys.

Stock turbo right now... but I have a VF24 coming in the mail as we speak. Got a bunch of other upgrades in the works too, as I get the stuff done I'm sure I'll post.
