JDM tranny compatibility

Post by supernoob »

I'm looking into getting a front clip from something around a JDM 93 Legacy Turbo to put into my 90 Leg. Not sure whether I want an AT or MT with it. Are there any differences are far as wiring goes with either the AT or MT compared with the USDM? Will the JDM 4eat work with the old TCU? I will soon be buying a 93-4 Wagon for my wife. I could just buy one with a dead 4eat for dirt cheap and slap the JDM one in there, if it works.

some info I think this is correct:
You need to stay in the years 89-93 only on a JDM tranny from a legacy.
The JDM 94+ has electronic speedometer control, so those won't work with your speedometer setup. (the 94 JDM model is actually like the 95's here in the US)
Also, the impreza tranny would work, but it is not as strong, it is built for the lighter-wieght chassis of an Impreza.

good luck finding a good used one.

For a manual, all of them will bolt up.

There are electric to mechanical speedo converters out there. If anything, an electric speedo is easier to set up so the ECU can read VSS. Plus, if you use the gauge cluster from the JDM car, it'll work just fine.

Not true. Between the Legacy and Impreza, there were few, if any gearbox changes. Strength wise, they are about the same.

I have a guy in my neck of the woods that imports JDM Roo stuff. Tell me what you need and what you are getting quoted and I will ask him to see what he says.

Might be cheaper for you if you have someone in your neck of the woods though.

Actually, I'm looking into getting a JDM front clip from a 89-93 Legacy with a EJ20G and 4eat. There is an importer in GA that regularly sells them for $700 + shipping with around 50K. If I can use or sell the tranny, obviously that's more attractive. Many importers sell just the motors for over $1000 + shipping. These clips come with all the wiring and ECU and even the fuel pump and half shafts. Seems like a pretty good deal. Just wish I had some money right now. Did you get that water pump put in?

I presume you are refering to JHOT. They are good guys. I also presume you are looking to get the EJ20T and not the EJ20TT.

I bought an EJ20TT minus the turbos to put in my old legacy. I hurt my back doing it but I sold it to a guy that did put it in his and he loved it.

I know I don't have to tell you that the EJ20TT won't fit in the LHD legacys.

Yup, it's JHOT. One turbo is all I need. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to go, whether it's an EG33 or EJ20G. I guess my goal would be high 13s.

The EJ33 is a PITA. Everyrtime somoene mentions them on the board they get noghting but bad comments. I am under the impression that they get no love from the legacy lovers. If it was me I would go with an EJ20T.

Is this true only for swapping in a JDM MT into a USDM MT or does it also apply to converting a USDM AT Legacy into one equipped with a '93 or prior JDM MT Legacy tranny? If the conversion is done, would there be ANY modifications to make to make everything bolt up and fit correctly?

If you have all of the right parts, very little modification is required.

But remember, you aren't taking a walk in a park. Doing a swap of this kind is going to require lots of modification of SOMETHING.
