2.5l engine
I have a 97 outback with a 2.5l engine it keeps overheating I was told there is a head gasket problem with these motors. My question is should I just replacw the gaskets or look for another motor. Thanks Dave

Why would he need machine work unless it was warped?

60 is a little hopefull.
I am experienced with the phase I. Better do timing belt and valve cover gaskets and gromets. If you plan on keeping it do cam seals. You can go aftermarket on everything but the grommets IMHO.
Still I think you could do it for around $200.
As for warpage, straight edge. You should be fine.
