I guess Patti needs new HLA's.

I just resealed her oil pump yesterday, new O-ring and RTV sealant (that's what the Sooby mechanic told me to use). I was having a slight valve tap only at idle, went away above 1500rpm; I also found out the old O-ring was leaking really bad, and I knew my left cam seal was leaking, so I took care of all that.

So I start her up this morning, and everything sound A-Okay... until it drops below 1500rpm...

Still tapping!!!

This really pisses me off, because 1) this car only has 149k miles and 2) I've never left oil in that engine for longer than 4k miles.

I dunno how the fuck you guys' cars get away with 10k oil changes for 200k miles and don't have a problem; I guess I'm just not that lucky.

I'm going to try to avoid any more SIA Subarus from now on.

Guess I better start pricing out 16 new HLA's...

You run any cleaner through your oil? Could just be a stuck lifter.

You should be able to bleed the air out of them, take each one out and submerse it in oil and squeeze the air out of them. You'll be able to tell pretty easily when you get one that's dead. I also doubt that all 16 went dead.

However, should you find that you have some dead ones, I've got some left from my old engine. They should still be good and I'd be willing to let you have as many as you need (up to 14, that's all I have ) for $5 a piece and shipping.

I just ran some ATF through it last oil change, and that actually made them worse temporarily, probably because that opened up my leaky oil pump seals more. It had slowly started going away, probably because I'm using high-mileage oil, and I think that was slowly sealing those seals back up a bit.

Before I go replacing lifters, I'm gonna test my oil pressure. It could be something like the relief valve on the oil pump not working correctly, who knows?

I might have an old oil pump for shippig cost if you need it, but I'll have to hunt it down.

Thanks for the offer Steve, but the funny thing with Subarus (I found out the same thing with my XT), it's actually cheaper to just buy a complete new oil pump than to rebuild one. It lists for $139.95, and I get it 10% above cost...

More good news... The bleeder screw sprung a leak right in the center - however that's possible - spewing coolant all over the place, and I have 50 more miles to drive today, and no chance to run home and get the wagon, and maybe not even a chance to stop and buy another gallon of coolant...

Well, I put the new bleeder screw in, and all is well. I really dunno how the old bleeder screw sprung a leak right in the middle of itself , maybe if I'm feeling ambitious I'll look closer at it.
