Yeah, you probably want to convert. Would be easiest to find a thrashed FWD Legacy (assuming your Impreza is FWD) and then just loot that car.

I believe the discs are the same, but you may have to get the rear spindles from the Legacy. I don't know if the drum brakes use the same spindle as a disc set up. It would certainly be easier with the ages-old bolts and junk on the spindles you'd otherwise have to disassemble. AWD spindles are different (they have an axle going through them, for one thing).

[Shameless plug] 1-3-2-4, I have my old, though still good, rear discs, calipers, and brand new pads from my FWD that you can have cheap ($45+ship) if you decide you want to do this.[/Shameless plug]
I know this conversion does get done by other people so it can't be that bad. You should probably roll over to NASOIC and check out what they have done. There are a lot more Impreza guys over there who should be able to answer your question.

NASOIC is ok.. But I call NASOIC = a play to ask questions but to get jokes with anwsers
Where here at Legacycental you get a Strightforward Anwser with hardly any BS added to it.
Which is why I ask some of my impreza questions here.
I was going to try and locate a FWD to pull the stuff from.
From what I understand I need the Whole kuckle correct? I was going to go with a friend to help pull some parts in the sometime Spring.

I'd get a big breaker bar and a pipe to put over it, some good penetrating fluid (might even want to hit it the day before), and a hammer. If you get stuck, try tensioning the bar on the bolts and rapidly hit the end of the handle in the direction you want to go with the hammer. It's the rapid hitting that works better than powerful sharp strikes (and is safer). A sawzall would be nice, too, if that damn trailing arm just doesn't want to give and you just need to get the damn thing out of the junk yard. That's a worst case and hopefully you won't have that much trouble. If you could get an air impact gun at it, that would be sweet, but I found the 18V Dewalt to be seriously lacking for such a task.
Something no one brought up is, what about the brake bias?
