What does "rebuild rec" mean?

Why do you say your ECU is dead?

to follow up...

so the ECU still functions at a basic level but is running in an open loop mode. check engine light won't go off. i'm not a super car genius been working w/ a mechanic who is on the subarus.

the following is the note from my mechanic. "tested purge solenoid and replaced. clear coded and tested - no codes available in D check mode, only in read memory now has (14, 15, 22, 23, 24, 32, 35, 42, 45, & 49!). need to find a used ECU or someone to rebuild [the one you got]. "

so that's what i'm looking for.
thanks,
a

Hrm. That doesn't seem to make sense; clearing the codes would mean that there wouldn't be any in memory.

Maybe we should discuss this in another thread in the electrical or engine forum, but in short:

Read up on pulling trouble codes; it's easy to do. You can do a better job than your mechanic. You can find out why your Check Engine light is on. You'll want to try clearing the codes and then seeing which ones come back. Chances are fairly slim that it is your ECU that's at fault.

As far as I know, there aren't ECU rebuilders who deal with our ECUs.

we've been clearing codes over and over for a couple of weeks now. there are some consistancies, but for the most part it's all over the map. started out with seven, got it down to three, then it went to two for a while, then eight, now it's kicking ten codes.

he's been posting it to boards and getting all kinds of answers but everything keeps coming up ECU

Hm, that's odd indeed.

Good luck finding an ECU. You can use one from any 91-94 Legacy Turbo.
