FMIC is installed.

Post by douglas vincent »

About 99% finished.

I have about 9 hours so far in the install so far.

1.5 hours getting the bumber off.

3.5 hours cutting sheet metal and aluminium tubing to fit.

3 hours buttoning up everthing, moving intake parts, cutting LARGE LARGE sections of bumber out, including the turn signals.

IF I was turbo, all would be right with the world. But no, I have to be different. The damn supercharger, which without an intercooler has minimal mounting problems, has SERIOUS problems now, meaning the intake and outflow are not even situated where they should be. In fact, the entire SC mounting setup has to be refabbed 100%.

However, I was able to get it cobbled together (in fact, it is already done) so that it runs and drives fine, but I lose 2-3 psi due to restricted intake and outflow. On the plus side, its now intercooled.

On the plus sides of things, the main portions of the FMIC and piping are generally where they should be, look good, and no serious bends. And when I actually get around to installing the 2nd supercharger, I would have to remount the orginal SC anyway, so now I just will be ahead of the game.

I took it for a test drive and POW, blew off a hose. Fixed it, and POW blew off the same hose. Luckily I was actually on my way to get some T-bolts. I bought enough for all sections but one (didnt count it, whoops) and of course, it blew off on the way home in the dark later in the day.

But, it works pretty damn good.

I reworked my side marker lights into turn signals while I was at it, and 100% installed my headlights for the first time since I owned the wagon!

Its up and working. Had to get T-bolt clamps, but it works! Missing the entire underside of the front of the bumber and had to get rid of the turn signals.......

Lost about 2-3 psi.

The NA bumber and the Turbo bumbers are very different. Brando has the same intercooler and its hidden BEHIND the bumber, you don't see it at all. But he also lost his turn signals.

I plan on doing somesort of black/red painted mesh to hide it.

I bet that thing would even have fit in the grille area with minor trimming of the bumper on top! Maybe....

Looks crazy though! I'm surprised you cut that much out!

Your a wild man! Is that sumbitch secure?

Did you take pipe routing pics? Under hood pics? Come on man!

Its bolted to the underside of the steel bumber frame.

It would have fit behind the grill, but then I would either have to remove the bumber frame, or have no headlights.....

You are the craziest man alive.... and that is awesome!

Any way you could clock or rotate the supercharger a little to get better inlet/outlet angles?

That'd be key if you could do that. Maybe add shims under one side of it or something just to tweak it a little while maintaining belt alignment.

I need to remount the SC at 90% angle to what it currently is and that will improve outflow a HUGE amount. It also has to be done for when I mount the second SC on the other side where the battery is currently located.

But that has to wait for another day.

Yeah, less power. Cause it saps some of my precious PSI.

However, I am able to pull less timing, and it seems to pull smoother.

And probably 99% safer!

Having the FMIC has changed a few things.

First, it takes a little more throttle to get to 0 atmospere to turn the supercharger on. Which is nice.

Second, I have turned down the amount of fuel I have been adding AND started heading back to 0 timing pulled. Power feels pretty nice.
