so, about the begining of january i broke a gear in my red car (longest 2 months of my life) for those of you who didnt know (which should be alot of people because i didnt mention it much ) but i finally got around to pulling the tranny and replacing it with a JDM 4.11 turbo tranny but i wanted to see the carnage, so i cracked the case.
as you can see, second gear doesnt like td05's
second gear on the input side
some spare teeth
most of the pieces
there is a couple videos of me spinning the shafts around so you can see the broken gears a little better **here** i only spent a total of about $60 on this transmission ($50 for 97 impreza tranny with bad center diff section, and i had to buy my brother lunch for the case), so i'm not to broken up about it

td05+lead foot. hahaha, j/p. i dont know exactly how it went yet, but i think nick got the gist of it if you look at the video/pictures of the output shaft, you'll see that there is a spot where just 2 teeth are broken. i think that those teeth broke off then got sucked back up into the works and the big stripped area is the end result. when it broke there was a thunk, and i had time to think "WTF!!?!?!" and then it went BANG and the car almost died (i was going about 25-30ish in 2nd gear) it still moved in second gear, but only for a few feet. it would still go into all of the gears except first which was weird because usually when the teeth get down into the shift rails they lock the shift rails up and keep them from moving into any gears.

Matt, just don't throw out the tranny, as I'll buy it off you. Phil knows what I'm looking for.

yup, i found a good deal on a JDM 4.11 turbo tranny locally (i bought 2 so i got an even better deal) i'll be getting a 4.11 vlsd to replace the 3.9 vlsd this weekend too. dont worry though, i did switch the rear diff to a 4.11..... its just an open 4.11 for now

I wonder if I'll ever crack mine open.
its so easy matt, all you need is a 14mm socket and wrench, a 12mm socket and wrench, and there is 1 10mm bolt. i will make a video or a writeup on how to take it apart if you need one..... its just so easy!!!!

Oh, I'm not saying that I think it would be hard to crack open, I know it would be easy. I'm just saying I wonder if I'll ever actually do it because of how busy I am. My wife's due in May and I already have zero time as it is and it's only going to get worse.

Jake- how easy was it to find the 4.11 tranny and VLSD?
pretty easy actually.... i went to FF (my afterwork hangout ) and they had just got one and i picked it up from them. then i picked up the VLSD in trade from a guy that works at the shop i work at (PIA). he has an auto WRX and he's doing a 5speed swap with 3.9 FD and thats what my old VLSD FD was so i traded him straight across.
and tristan- the 4.11 tranny is great.... the car definitely has a better feel to it

Does the guy you swapped with realize what the WRX manual transmission will do to a 3.90 Rear Diff?
I hope he is aware of that. The WRX did NOT come with a 3.90 rear end. It came with a 3.545 rear end. He needs the transmision rear section from an old Legacy or Impreza, or he'll grenade the center diff.

yep, he's got a normal, non reduction diff. the WRX tranny he bought had been towed with the back wheels on the ground and it ruined ALL of the stuff in the center diff casing, so i sold him one from a spare tranny.

Cool, I'll have to check them out in my search for another trans.
