How long has yours sat?
I'm at 5 months, almost to the day, that my car has been sitting out of commission.
I can't even start the thing!
What's your longest down time?

5 months also. Just got the motor mounts in, but now I'm thinking I might as well just wait and have it towed to the new house than spend money on a custom exhaust just so I can drive it for a couple months. It killed me to sit in it, though. The Mazda's just not the same. I might have ruined my rack, too since I didn't expect to have to wait 3 months to get motor mounts, I left the hydraulic lines uncovered. I must have forgotten, but then I should've been back out there fixing it months ago.

Two weeks while I was on vacation. Started right up when I turned the key when I got back.

Almost 3 months for the wheel bearings. It shouldn't have taken near that long though.

3 months, waiting for parts that SOA didn't have, at the mechanics. This was before I was aware of sites like this, and I found the parts in several places online within weeks of joining SLi last May.
Started right up though, when my dad and I came in and spirited it away to get the engine running @ 2 months of sitting there.

My '84 wagon sat for 7 months while I had my cursed 260Z. Started right up and had no frozen brakes when I finally got my title back (long story, family dispute).

my xt6 has been out of commission since I got it last summer... almost a year man it sucks... but I've put lotsa money in it so far, and more money is going into it... and hopefully I will have a real beautiful machine at the end that I can say "you see that? I paid $500 and drove 20 hours straight to get that... and it was in real rough shape... " then smoke 'em on the track

Yeah, my wagon's going to be out for a lot longer, but when it's done it will be AWD with a tank transmission, seam welded, and turboed. See you guys at the F&S with the Mazda.

my motor blew mid december and i havent drivin it since, it should have been running with the new motor a while ago but shit keeps making it take longer. i have a 96 jdm wrx motor stroked to a 2.2 with 2.5 heads and intake monifold and and sti crank cams pistons and injectors, plus a stage 2 clutch disc. the project has been slowed down by all the fabrication associated with a right hand motor going into a left hand car, it has a custom waterpump from an xt6, custom motormounts from an svx, and custom shifting linkage, this is all going on outdoors and it is constanly delayed by weather. it is finally running but i still need to put on the exhaust and get an obd2 crank sensor. my beater chevy celebrity wagon died when the ball joint went and the wheel fell off so i am really trying to get the subaru going even more so, at this point i could care less how fast it is, i just need wheels.

My SS has been down almost a week, after I started to replace one of my front wheel bearings. Well, it was much worse than I had anticipated, as it wore down into the actual hub. So instead of ordering a new one from the dealer like I should've, it took me just as long to locate a used one. To top it off, it cost almost the same as a new one, after figuring in gas money in my truck. I'm getting the bearing pressed on tomorrow, so it should be up and running tomorrow night. One day short of a week.

How bad would it be to let the car sit for a year without being run? (outdoors not garaged)
If I did do that, is there anything I should do to it to mothball it?

You could run some sea foam through it or 2-stroke oil in the gas like we do for boats before shutting it down and putting fuel preservative in the tank. You could also just squirt a little oil in each cylinder. Disconnect the battery, pump up the tires, maybe put it on blocks to take the weight off the tires. It's best to have it over asphalt or concrete instead of lawn in terms of corrosion.

The reddevil has been down a few times for a few months or so at a time.
But, the last subarus I owned (1977 and 1976) were down for over a year. The the wife had them towed. Lets just say that was a sore point in our relationship and move on.........and she failed to remove from the front seat the NEW carburator.......and the NEW front calipers.....Oh yeah, I said I would move on.......

Seven Months and counting. The car is fine. I just bought a new battery for it and changed the oil. I do go out and start it about twice a week, sometimes moving it from one parking spot to another. I work 5 minutes away by foot and parking permits costs what I pay in rent for my home. It's not worth paying so much in insurance and registration for something that's not necessary. I take a fuel can by bicycle to the gas station to add a couple of gallons occassionally.
It seems that if it's started regularly, turning everything on at least momentarily (AC, lights, etc.) it seems to work just fine. I've never had a domestic that could do that.
The brake rotors will have a very slightly uneven surface (corrosion) in a matter of days though.
