Your right about :

Pauter = $$$

Eagle = $335
Pauter = $720

They are also a little heavier then the Eagle H-Beams but the guys from Pauter say that they are strong.

Ron Lummis (who builds the fastest Volkswagens on the planet, like we are talkin 500+hp Bugs) uses Pauter stuff...and it holds up

Carillo wanted to charge my shop $210 per rod or something ridiculous like that.

Thats really not too awefully bad for custom rods.

I had a quote from ion performance of $1780 + shipping for their Rod/Piston setup to go with the stroker setup I am building.

Here was there reasoning:

Hi Brad, the rods/pistons are more expensive then other custom sized
ones
for several reasons: (a) The rods themselves are made to our
proprietory
specifications by Oliver; they're not available to anyone else on the
market. We've designed them to provide lower drag and better oiling
then
what's available from a "standard" point of view. (b) The pistons
themselves are also priprietory design, it's done so to optimize the
detonation resistance as well as minimize rotating mass.

You can definately run different pistons/rods as you so choose, however
most of not all are not designed to improve specific shortcomings
that's
offered in the "mass" produced market.

Best Regards,

Jack

This whole explanation doesn't make much sense as to why they would be nearly twice the price of commonly available setups. I guess your paying for their "design". Its not like they are made of titanium.

I thought Pauter was pretty reasonable for the quality of work. Plus they will engineer something for you if they need to. We had a set of custom rods made for the RS6 project and they were done pretty quick, look great and IIRC were only like $2k

Ion's explanation is pretty typical of speed shop that are offering a new product. Basically, the shop has to eat the R&D costs of making something application specific, and passes it on to the customer. Generally, the exclusivity agreement only lasts a couple of years, and the actual manufacturer eventually reclaims the rights to the product and can sell them themselves. At that point, the price goes down because the masses figure it out and start buying manufacturer direct, instead of through the speed shop...

In our shop if we aren't using OE rods, all of our race builds use Carrilo or Pauter rods depending ultimately on the customer's request/budget. You can't go wrong with either one of them...

I was really displeased by Carrillo's customer service. I thought they were extremely rude.

That means a lot to me in my decision to do business with someone. I recently had a bit of a row with a vendor because I had a problem, and I didn't get any input from them in a timely fashion. It turned out to be a misunderstanding, and we worked it out. But when a company doesn't treat me right, I pretty immediately take my buying $$$ elsewhere...

Agreed. I don't understand how companies get the idea that we "have" to buy their stuff.

Looks like the Pauters are my first choice unless anyone can post STI rod specs. If the STIs are similar enough I would consider them.

Here are the specs from Pauter for the crank I am using:
