Timing Covers Necessary?

yeah definately not like NASIOC's OT...
I decided last night I was going to run the legacy without A/C belt or tensioner.. and sans timing belt covers, so I ripped them all off
should be quicker to fix when iminent failure occurs

One pebble is all it takes to shred a timing belt.

no skidplate yet, but nothing is being done to the car other than necessary maintenance unit I get one, because skidplate is priority. going to make gas tank skidplate and rear diff protector as well.Splinter wrote:If you were running a skidplate I'd imagine running without a belt cover would be fine...
I believe that I'll be fine on the road without covers, at least until I get a skidplate to help out some more

cool, can't wait to see how it worksSplinter wrote:I put my covers back on after I did my belt, but Ill pull them once I do the heads, Im sealing off the engine bay from the bottom, putting in a reverse scoop and vents (Venturi effect FTW)
So I shouldnt have to worry about pebbles or anything

Meh, it's not difficult to remove the covers.
Taking them off opens up the tensioner and idler pulleys to moisture and potential malfunction.

I see your point, but every bolt on mine was rounded off or rusted real good.. a couple broke off.. and the covers were cracked to shit anyway...
I'd say it was already open for moisture and potential malfunction..

still no problems after a few thousand miles (~100miles dirt/gravel roads), a whole day's worth of mudbogging in foot deep nasty mud, and a whole bunch of other crap
(that's without timing belt covers)

It looks like neither of the cars in your signature are interfearance engines, so just carry an extra belt or belts.
I think you are not likely to have many, if any problems, however if you are boggin' you may encounter a stick or two that may cause more problems than a few pesky rocks.
All that aside I will leave mine on.

I don't get it... why leave them off, eventualy something will get in there and dammage the belt or even the gears. If your bolts were rusty just get new bolts.
Leaving them off your just waiting for soemthing to go wrong, and you'll be pretty pissed when you're in the middle of nowhere and need a timing belt.
