yeah, but i didn't see prices. I want this to be economical, as the auto seems to be wearing out. I don't have a turbo either, mine's a 96 legacy sedan NA. Plus i didn't realize that was the same person that did this site.

cheapest way to do the swap is find a wrecked car with a good drivetrain and swap everything over.

if you look at the time involved, there is absolutely nothing economical about it

auto to manual swap

Post by aludeman »

It wasn't too painful. In the end I think I only spent about $1000 for the conversion, and that includes selling the auto tranny. I did the labor. It's hard to say how much time I spent on it, since I was also rebuilding the motor at the same time.

Some rough numbers on cost for me are:
transmission from 91 turbo: $1000
(that came with all bolts, hydraulic clutch, and pedals.)

lightened flywheel/act clutch: $993
transmission mount: $100 (though you could probably find a used one)

plus labor. I think a rough estimation would be 8-10 hours.
oh don't forget the wiring for reverse and park switch.

I have this information on my website too. Not a write up though like Dave's site.

good luck

Super Info!

WOW! I joined your website today after reading the entire a/t to m/t swap yesterday morning. While I was reading the account, I was convinced it would be insane for me to take that route. My a/t is toast. Stinky black fluid slips in 3, no 4.
Later yesterday I saw a '90 m/t awd at the local u-pull-it and that fired me up. I began sharing the story I read with my guys at the shop and they pumped me up!! You Can Do IT!! SO......my question....does the donor m/t have to come off a turbo? I don't have a turbo m/t vin # to compare the tranny ID.
I would enjoy any input from other members and will also make a huge collection of cars and parts available cheap!!

The turbo trans was quite a bit stronger than the non turbo, there's not really any other difference. You just have to make sure your rear diff matches the trans.

How is the tranny turbo stronger? From what I know they are all exactly the same except ratios and clutch type.

I heard all gears are shot-peened on turbo trannys.

the main difference is gears are shot peened....surface durability.....and it utilizes a hydrualic pull type clutch

tranny swap

Post by TurboGuy »

I went back to the u-pull-it today and was quoted $150.00 for the tranny and every part I need to make the conversion. They must count up frequent flyer miles somewhere. How could I not go for it!!!! Both rear ends are 4.111. Should work... right???....do I really need to switch drivelines or was that for balancing?
I will be in N.Idaho building a bridge to the little cabin until 9/22. No E-mail there fellas....but please let me know if I can help you find a part or two!! I will respond to every inquiry when I get back!!
Yikes...then I have to start this m/t conversion!! Actually I can't wait to get this unit up to a full ROAR!! Right now no 3 or 4 gears!

All subies for sale all the time. I'll get more!!
My U-pullit connection is AWESOME!! I know of a non-turbo 2.2 in a wrecked car I could probably get for a couple hundred bucks!! Why?? It was hit in the front and damaged the outer pulleys and timing covers. Never started and tested, will be sold as a CORE!! Great news for someone needing a 95k motor!! Let me know if I can help!
